Nato in un paesino dell’Italia meridionale, all’età di due anni era partito, insieme con i suoi genitori, per l’Africa Orientale rimanendo fino all’età di 19 anni. Fu mandato in Italia, in un collegio privato, per completare gli studi del Liceo Scientifico. Poiché a lui piaceva frequentare l’Istituto Tecnico Industriale ed i genitori contrari e rimasti in Africa, lui si iscrisse di nascosto presso l’Accademia di Belle Arti, dopo aver ultimato le scuole del Liceo Scientifico, ma fece una scelta di vita diversa perché amante dell’avventura quindi, dapprima fece il rappresentante di commercio per alcuni anni e con molte soddisfazioni, poi lavorò presso industrie meccaniche ed infine utilizzò la sua patente di guida, facendo l’autotrasportatore in proprio visitando quasi tutta Europa. Amante della natura, fece costruire la sua casa identica a quella avuta in Africa, con un grande giardino tutto intorno colmo di infiniti alberi, bananeti, pini, palme e piante da frutta. Amante della musica, gli piaceva suonare la pianola e la fisarmonica. Qualche volta dipingeva quadri che regalava. Gli piaceva viaggiare, ma aveva sempre nel cuore la sua Africa, così la chiamava, però aveva promesso a se stesso, di ritornarci almeno per un giorno, prima della sua dipartita. Amava i suoi figli con tutti i nipotini compresa la compagna della sua vita. Ormai divenuto vecchio, per ricordarsi della vita passata, scriveva libri avventurosi, avendo una grande fantasia, forse per ricordarsi di quei tempi trascorsi felici del passato.

About the Author
Roy Hattersley was elected to Parliament in 1964. He served in Harold Wilson’s government and in Jim Callaghan’s Cabinet. In 1983 he became deputy leader of the Labor Party. As well as contributing to a host of national newspapers, he has written 22 books, including The Edwardians, Borrowed Time, and In Search of England as well as much acclaimed biographies of John Wesley and, most recently, Lloyd George. Roy Hattersley has been Visiting Fellow of Harvard’s Institute of Politics and of Nuffield College, Oxford. In 2003 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

Returned it - Publisher sets DRM to not allow TTS for the Blind!

The publisher of this book has turned off the ability for the visually impaired to use text-to-speech with this book. If there was an audiobook to purchase instead I would have purchased it. It turns out the publisher HAS made an audiobook version. It is ONLY available to users in the UK. In the United States the audiobook is exclusive to a certain "ebook rental service." They will rent the audiobook to you but it can not be downloaded and it is not available of you cancel. I refuse to use them after the service deleted books from user devices without warning or care.

This book might be wonderful. It certainly looked that way from the sample, which did allow TTS. Once I purchased it, I found the publisher is so greedy that it robs disabled users of the ability to access it. It is almost a bait and switch. Who would prefer TTS? How dare a blind person need a terrible robotic voice that can't pronounce words or names (it pronounces Henry VII and the VIII as "Henry vee")? This DRM restriction is so offensive that I returned the book. Please consider not purchasing from publishers who violate the ADA.

An amazing insight into the history of the Devonshires, though you have to concentrate hard to untangle all the family histories over the past 600 years.

Someone should look at this as TV Mini series and soon. Think of the casting possibilities.
An Oscar maybe. I found the book invaluable for Anglofiles.
