Not what I expected.

This is most assuredly not what I expected. Many of the books on this subject will lead you by the hand, down the path the author wants you to follow. David presents many items that you had not thought about and leaves you looking for more details. Does he lead you astray? Hardly. He rather, points you in a direction and shows you some of the potential land mines to be avoided.

In doing it that way, David provides you with solid information that leaves, me at least, looking forward to finding more.

Covers old ground, lacks credible detail

Let me start by saying that I agree with everything in this very short treatise. If it had been a magazine article, it would be a good overview of the state of the gun rights/gun control issue. However, there is nothing new here. Gun rights supporters will know all of these arguments by heart -- and in greater detail than they are presented here. Those who are ambivalent on the issue and seek to learn more will find the arguments weak. Not because they are wrong, but because they lack citation. The author presents many sweeping generalizations without any supporting evidence or documentation. A couple of footnotes would have gone a very long way to buoy their credibility. For example, when the author makes the claim that, "Every major congressional bill that has been introduced in the past several years under the title of "background checks" was written by Michael Bloomberg's staff and contained provisions for national gun registration," he needs to back that up with some kind of evidence. Cite a source. Footnote a study. Do something other than just make what appears to be an exaggerated claim. Any fifth grader reading the author's description of the battle of Lexington & Concord will know that a good deal of information has been left out, and what is there is overgeneralized to the point of being highly questionable. Those are just two of many examples. Unfortunately, this tract isn't going to change anybody's mind.

In short: too broad, lacks detail or credible sources, not worth the $5 or the 20 minutes to read it. Three stars because the points it does make are valid and important.

A tragic, but beautiful novel, based on a true account

When Wold War II breaks out no one is rescuing the children of the orphanage in Rangoon, Burma. The 62 Anglo-Burmese children aren't wanted by the British nor by the Burmese, so they are left with their teacher, Grace Collins, while the others flee.
As the threat of the Japanese grows stronger, Grace decides to deliver the children to the safety of India herself. Their journey starts in an old school bus, but soon they end up in the jungle with nothing left and no help from others.
Just as Grace starts despairing a group of elephants and men appear. They are willing to take the orphans to India. But will they make it?

I love reading historical novels and one of my favourite subjects is WWII. Not just the ordinary soldier stories, but the more special ones, about people and what they do to survive, so it's logical I was immediately attracted to this novel.

And I wasn't disappointed. I loved Grace and the way she tried to save the children. It was also nice to read about the children, but I had the feeling that Sweeney only `knows' a few of them. About five children are actively taking part in the story, but the others aren't mentioned once, not even a name. They are always addressed as `the children' of `the group'.

The elephant men are fantastic. They give you such a warm feeling! I would like to have seen them for real. It's such an unreal situation, but in fact it's based on a true account, but unfortunately one that didn't end well.

Of course I can't image what it would have been like if I were there, but this novel gives you an idea of the jungle, its secrets and the fear you have if someone is chasing you down.
If you are looking for a road (or better an elephant) novel, then this is what you should read!

The first chapters are exceptionally well crafted, depicting the situation of the main character and her environment in both a sensitive and humorous way. I thought in turns of Graham Greene and John Le Carré, or even "African Queen" (the novel). There were later shifts in point of view which felt a bit clumsy, a saccharine romance à la "English Patient" and a vaudeville villain whose subplot I thought added only an embarrassment of grit to a situation already fraught with tension. I mean, if you are trying to escape the advancing Japanese army with a convoy of orphans through a hostile jungle, you have action enough without needing to pick Jack the Ripper on the way

About the Author
KEN HENRY retired from the U.S. Navy in 1974 as a senior chief engineman. He was one of the first volunteers accepted for Operation Sea Scan aboard the USS Archerfish. He lives in South Florida. DON KEITH is a successful broadcaster and critically acclaimed novelist. His debut novel, The Forever Season, was named 1997 fiction award winner by the Alabama Library Association. He lives with his wife in Indian Springs Village, Alabama.

Gallant Lady traces the history of a remarkable "boat" from its WWII pinnacle with the sinking of Japanese super-carrier Shinano to the final Cold War mission.

This latter segment of the story is told from the 'rag hat' perspective and gives insights that are informative, entertaining and funny as hell.

"Rollicking" is probably the term Hollywood would use, and probably such a movie from the latter part of this book would be a hit. There is little question of the drama of ARCHERFISH wartime patrols and her singular distinction in stalking and sinking the world's largest enemy ship on its maiden voyage. Like many other accounts of submarine warfare, GALLANT LADY vividly describes the stuffy quarters, grimy tension, and grim excitement of WWII submarine life. Where the book becomes unusual is in the story of ARCHERFISH's third commission as auxiliary to a modernized fleet in which she has become an anachronism. Not intimidated by her diminishing status, she forges her own direction for the next ten years, embracing with gusto a series of routinejobs and a unique assignment that no other ship can be spared for. In the process her maverick (and envied) crew lives an experience of exploration, adventure, and hi-jinks worthy of the sea sagas of earlier centuries. No other commissioned ship of the Navy has enjoyed such a voyage, and no others are likely to. This is a fascinating tale of camaraderie and initiative in service to our country that belongs in every seafarer's locker. Frank S. Virden, Captain, USN (Ret.)

About the Author
David Wright's research interests lies in the overlapping fields of cognition, embodiment, performance, creativity, learning, and systems thinking. He approaches this work through the lens of Social Ecology, which looks at the relationships that facilitate understanding. Central here is the creative communication of learning. David teaches in the overlapping fields of Social Ecology, Transformative Learning, Creativity, and Sustainability. He has published nationally and internationally on cognition, learning, drama, embodiment, constructivism, and creativity and has written creative fiction and plays for performance. David is currently coordinator of Social Ecology at UWS and coordinator of Research Higher Degree students in the School of Education.

Dr. Catherine E. Camden-Pratt received her master's degree in Applied Science (Social Ecology) in 1997 and her Ph.D. in 2003. In 2000, she began teaching in Social Ecology at the UWS and has taught in diversity and pedagogy studies in the School of Education. Catherine foregrounds critical creativity in her teaching and research in which she integrates creative arts. Her pedagogies are student centred and experiential with the focus on praxis. Her current teaching includes Learning and Creativity in the Education Studies Major and Applied Imagination in the Master of Education (Social Ecology). Catherine is currently the course adviser for the Education Studies major. She has exhibited her artwork, published a popular book from her creative and transgressive 2002 Ph.D., as well as performing research plays. She spends her spare time writing poetry and painting.

The youngest of four kids growing up in a safe, loving family, Suzy is first seen listening to her dad read Ogden Nash's poem about Custard, the dragon who stays brave despite his inner fears. Thus the stage is set for her father's imminent deployment. In this pre-Internet world, his postcards provide tenuous but tangible connections as the first grader tries to comprehend what a jungle is, what her father is doing there, and the passage of time (“Has it been a year yet?”). But Suzy's concerns increase when Dad confuses her birthday with a sister's, and then the postcards cease. When one abruptly surfaces, Dad signs it, “Pray for me.” (She does, “very hard.”) Television news and a near-drowning incident during a swimming lesson feed the child's anxieties. Suddenly, Dad is home, “tired and thin… his skin… the color of pancake syrup.” Suzy struggles to articulate her harbored fears, which he gently allays, and the two resume reading about Custard, whose stoicism surely resonates more deeply for them. Vibrantly colored cartoon illustrations, outlined in thick black ink, underscore a child's point of view. The characters' enormous eyes and boldly colored pupils provide an arresting motif. And where more realistic illustrations would feel overwrought and sentimental, Proimos’ flat, cartoony drawings, with their heavy lines and blocky shapes, are sturdy and sweet, reflecting a child’s clear-eyed innocence. While small personal details and specific references to Vietnam fix the story in one child’s individual experience, it is these very particularities that establish the kind of indelible and heartfelt resonance that is universally understood. GREAT HUMOR -- GREAT CHARACTERS... FUN READ

I picked up Séance Society at my local bookstore and had an absolute blast reading it. Laughed out loud a number of times-- a throwback mystery with great characters, very enjoyable, classic in its structure. They don't make 'em like this anymore. I plan to purchase more to give as gifts. Highly recommend

Good old time mystery solved in the foyer, even includes the butler!!!

I received this book free from Net Galley in exchange for a review.

I really liked this book a lot. The story was set in the late 1950's and all the semblance of an old time mystery novel, even the butler. When it came time to reveal the murderer, the scene took place in the sitting room of a large, supposedly haunted, mansion. It felt like I was reading a script based on the game, Clue.

The characters were well developed and the story was interesting. There were quite a few quirky characters and everyone at sometime during the story was a suspect.

I would definitely recommend this book.

A Classic Mystery with a Paranormal Twist

Young Lee Plunkett has inherited his father’s private-eye business but doesn’t seem cut out for the job as much as his ex-cop father. But when Trexler Lloyd, an eccentric inventor and entrepreneur is electrocuted in his Spectricator, a machine designed to speak with the dead, Plunkett finds himself drawn into the mystery surrounding the ghost-seeker’s death. A retired cop is certain that Lloyd was murdered and asks Plunkett to investigate. Urged on by his fiancée Audrey, Plunkett enlists the aid of Mr. O’Nelligan, a genial and scholarly Irishman with the gift of blarney to investigate Lloyd’s death.

The duo encounters a host of colorful characters, including a surly medium, a former speakeasy queen, a gardener that sees ghosts, a snobby English chauffer, a beautiful Spanish widow, and a household of bizarre servants, any one of whom could be implicated in Lloyd’s murder.

This debut novel is a mystery in traditional Agatha Christie style with smart and witty dialogue, touches of humor, and a fast-paced narrative. The paranormal theme gives the story a contemporary feel without sacrificing the traditional elements of a mystery. It’s an enjoyable read and highly recommended. One hopes there will be more Plunkett-O’Nelligan mysteries.
