Disappointed at first that it's only to another part of their town, he soon realizes that adventures can happen anywhere-even in his own backyard. This is a fun easy reader book with great full-color cartoons, brief text in large print, and likable characters. A bonus page gives instructions for making a compass, leading to a great interactive experience. Stranger Things has a bit more text and fewer illustrations. Ed feels that he does not have any interesting traits or talents; he is simply an extremely normal boy. However, he has no idea just what is in store for him when he finds a coin that says "strange, stranger." Soon everything is erupting into chaos, from his sister's food train turning into an actual moving train at the dinner table to a friend being able to turn his head completely around. Are these strange happenings trying to send Ed a message? This is a silly book that will pull kids in with the goofy plot and the fun black-and-white illustrations. The truly strange thing about this book is that it references Albert Camus's The Stranger, an odd choice for this audience. Great book for 1st/2nd graders

Have a son who finished first and we're heading into the summer months--I was hoping these new Scholastic branches books would help encourage him to keep reading through the summer. High interest story--girls and boys might like it--really hard to find a lot of early chapter books that boys will like. This has that sci-fi edge to it but isn't scary. I only wish more of these Branches books would be out this summer!

Great potential!

Everything in this book is weird and wacky.~~my son's thoughts.

My daughter's thoughts: The book itself was very interesting and funny. The story was good, and I can't wait for book two. I loved how Matt Loveridge drew the characters, and how David Lubar created them to be strange. Strange is good! I think younger kids will really enjoy this book, and hopefully the entire series.

Like my brother said, everything in this book is weird and wacky. Weird and wacky, but in a good way.

My thoughts: I think this series has the potential to be a fun one. "Book One's" are sometimes hard because the author has to get a lot out there for the reader to understand where the story is going. I think the antics will be interesting to follow and there may even be a few life lessons thrown in too. A promising first book in a new fantasy series for both boys and girls to enjoy.

In this remarkable work of interdisciplinary scholarship, architect and scholar Epifania Akosua Amoo-Adare makes the case for an urgently needed praxis of critical spatial literacy, particularly for women of African descent. Through a compelling analysis of fifteen Asante women's negotiation of the politics of space, she demonstrates how they critically read the postmodern world in order to make place within it. This contains within it the promise of a feminist, 'renegade' architectural project in which spatial literacy allows one to navigate the significant socio-spatial effects of akwantu, anibuei ne sikas?m: travel, 'civilization,' and economics.

About the Author
Epifania Akosua Amoo-Adare is a research specialist at Reach Out to Asia (ROTA), a non-profit organization affiliated with the Qatar Foundation. She has a PhD in Education from the University of California, Los Angeles and is a RIBA part II qualified architect, with over 26 years of experience working within the fields of education, international development, and social housing in countries like Afghanistan, Georgia, Ghana, Qatar, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

A powerful, emotionally resonant, in-depth ethnographic study

For anyone seeking to understand the impact of urbanization on women, families and household survival strategies in modern African cities, this is a wonderful book to add to your collection. The book is centers on the ethnography of 15 Asante women of various backgrounds who have made the decision to migrate to Accra. The book documents how each woman navigates her surroundings, becoming transformed and simultaneously transforming urban spaces to meet ever-changing needs.

The author was born in London, raised in Accra and Nairobi, with international training in South Africa, England and the United States. Her own sense of "being placeless and yet simultaneously filled with knowledge and ownership of different languages of urban space" (p. 7) informed the beginnings of her journey and transformation. Amoo-Adare is a careful ethnographer and empiricist, recognizing and situating her own positionality as formed from her identity, training, and critical reflection on the dominance and imposition of Western ideals onto African life and spaces.

The book is a timely addition to a small but growing literature (see, as examples, the work of Garth Myers and Abdoumaliq Simone) theorizing African urbanism. It also contributes to African feminist and womanist thought and adds to a much needed feminist discourse on architecture and the built environment by scholars with roots in the developing world.

This is a really well-written, thoughtful and emotional work, into which the author has poured her soul. I highly recommend this book for anyone taking a course or doing research on urbanization in Africa or developing countries, or who is studying Ghana in particular. I plan to use the book for courses I teach as it would make excellent recommended reading for undergraduate and graduate students alike.

He received his PhD in International Relations from Columbia University and is the author of Militarist Peace in South America (2006). His research focuses on war, peace, and strategy; strategic culture; Latin America affairs; security studies; and economic statecraft.

The most important book about democracy you will ever read

No one knows what democracy means--no one but Jean-Paul Gagnon. JPG, a truly visionary scholar and the editor of the Journal of Democratic Theory, sheds light on a subject typically fraught with ambiguity. The theory and principles that underpin democracy are unimaginably complicated, but JPG is able to make sense of it all. His penetrating analysis sends a lucid and engaging clarion call to those who would seek to understand what democracy is and where it is going. Indeed, his ambitious and illuminating book offers a way out of the contradictory myopia in which we find ourselves. He does this by answering important questions about the trajectory of democracy, the future of governance, and the human condition. It is not surprising that this book was nominated for the extremely prestigious 2013 Stein Rokkan Prize, and the University of Queensland (Australia) is lucky to have such an eminent scholar in its ranks. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a thoughtful conversation, and I highly suggest that this book be used in any course that addresses the otherwise incomprehensible subject known as democracy.

He rides his skateboard down the sidewalk and encounters animal friends along the way who are also feeling unhappy or grumpy. He shares his glasses with Squirrel, Turtle, and Alligator to improve their moods, too, until he hits a crack in the sidewalk and his glasses go flying. Wise Old Owl reminds Pete that it doesn't take glasses to make him see things positively; he can find the good in every day on his own. Though fans of the feline may find this story less engaging than the earlier ones, the charming folk-style illustrations reflect the mood of the characters. Pete has lost his groove

This children's librarian is SO disappointed. The first three Pete the Cat books have a groovy charm that makes them read-aloud hits with everyone from three-year-olds to third graders. (I haven't read them to older kids -- yet.) They fly off the shelves at my public library -- if you want a Pete the Cat book, you'll probably have to place a hold and wait for a while. Unfortunately, the magic is missing from Magic Sunglasses, and so is author/musician Eric Litwin. I hope Pete can get his groove back, but I suspect that Litwin's absence is the problem. Come back, Eric! Pete the Cat needs you!
