About the Author
Thich Nhat Hanh is one of the most revered Zen teachers in the world today. His best-selling books include Happiness and Peace Is Every Step. His previous books for children include, A Pebble for Your Pocket, The Coconut Monk, and The Hermit and the Well. He lives in Plum Village in southwest France, where he teaches the art of mindful living.

Wietske Vriezen was born in Wassenaar, The Netherlands. She met Thich Nhat Hanh during a retreat in Holland in 2000 and was touched deeply by the practice. Since then, she has illustrated a number of books based on the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh, most recently Mindful Movements and A Basket of Plums. She lives in Rotterdam, The Netherlands where she works as a psychologist with gifted children.

Unmatched Resource for Both Parents and Educators

This book is a beautiful, practical, and extremely helpful book that anyone interested in introducing children to mindfulness and related practices will greatly appreciate. It was written by the Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh, Vietnamese Zen monk and teacher, and author of many well-known books, including Peace Is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life. The book evolved out of his work with children at Plum Village Community, a Buddhist center in Southern France that he co-founded. The book encompasses the work of himself and many of his colleagues at Plum Village, including nuns and monks in-residence, as well as educators and parents that have attended retreats at the center focused on children.

Written for both parents and educators, each chapter of Planting Seeds begins with an overview of a topic, including mindful breathing, meditation, compassion, nature, suffering, healing, age, and death. After the overview, each chapter includes stories, sample activities, and guided meditations that adults can use to explore these themes with children. Many chapters include personal stories from educators and parents that work at Plum Village, or that attended retreats there and then strove to integrate what they learned in their work. They describe their personal experiences - including challenges - introducing children to these activities, in both home and school environments.

Although the themes are all grounded in Buddhism, they are introduced in a way that is non-religious, and so could be used to introduce children of any background to mindfulness. In fact, most of the educators that offer testimonials describe integrating these themes into secular environments, or even religious ones of other persuasions.

The book includes a CD with some of the guided meditations and songs tied to the exercises in the book, including "I Follow My Breath", "Pebble Meditation" and "Deep Relaxation for Young People." Lyrics are included for those songs that have them in the back of book, as well as written overviews of the guided meditations. Four meditation cards corresponding to the four meditations included in the 'Breathing in, Breathing Out' meditation are also in the Appendix.

For example, in the first meditation, the focus is on feeling as fresh and pure as a flower, so the card says:

"Breathing in, I see myself as a flower, a human flower...
Breathing out, I am beautiful just as I am, and I feel very fresh."

Subsequent cards are focused on being solid as a mountain, calm as still water, and free as open space.

Many chapters also include excerpts from Q&A sessions Thich Nhat Hanh did with children involved in these activities. One of my favorites was from a discussion on age and death (Thich Nhat Hanh is referred to as Thay here):

Child's Questions: How old are you?
Thay: Well, how old are you first?
Child: I am six, almost seven.
Thay: Listen, I am going to give you a good answer. I am the continuation of the Buddha, so I am 2,600 years old.
Child: Oh!
Thay: I am also the continuation of my father, so I am 110 years young. I know that you are my continuation and I feel that I am in you, so at the time I am six years old also. That is true, because I have been reborn in that child. He will carry me into the future. So I am quite young. I am six years old. If you look around, you see me a little bit everywhere. I have different ages. Okay?

Overall, this is a beautiful and practical book that any parent or educator (Buddhist or no) will treasure as a guide to introducing children to mindfulness, compassion, and related themes.

Practical, simple, great for all ages

I work in pediatric psychiatry and have found this book to be very helpful. As an author, Thich Nhat Hanh is engaging, knowledgeable and easy to follow. This book was no exception. I think this is a wonderful book for anyone who wants tips on teaching mindfulness to children. I think it is important to note, however, that some of the exercises are quite Easternized. For Example, there is one snack activity where the children bow to each other. I don't know that I would utilize that part of the activity, but could easily adapt it for my patients. There is also discussion about not killing mosquitos, so certainly one must be willing to take what they want from the book and make modifications as necessary. Overall, this is an excellent book. Thich Naht Hanh, once again, has done a terrific job with what could be a complicated subject.

Love this book -- it has so many great ideas of how to teach mindfulness to children (and for adults too). I am using it for my toddler and preschooler and they love the special time we spend learning from it.

During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, natural and social scientists began comparing certain insects to human social organization. Entomologists theorized that social insects -- such as ants, bees, wasps, and termites -- organize themselves into highly specialized, hierarchical divisions of labor. Using a distinctly human vocabulary that reflected the dominant social structure of the time, they described insects as queens, workers, and soldiers and categorized their behaviors with words like marriage, slavery, farming, and factories. At the same time, sociologists working to develop a model for human organization compared people to insects, relying on the same premise that humans arrange themselves hierarchically. In Debugging the Link between Social Theory and Social Insects, Diane M. Rodgers explains how these co-constructed theories reinforced one another, thereby naturalizing Western conceptions of race, class, and gender as they gained prominence in popular culture and the scientific world.

Using a critical science studies perspective not previously applied to research on social insect symbolism, Rodgers attempts to "debug" this theoretical co-construction. She provides sufficient background information to accommodate readers unfamiliar with entomology -- including in-depth explanations of the terms used in the research and discussion of social insects, particularly the insect sociality scale. The entire premise of sociality for insects depends on a dominant understanding of high/low civilization standards -- particularly the tenets of a specialized division of labor and hierarchy -- comparisons that appear to be informed by nineteenth-century colonial thought. Placing these theories in a historical and cross-cultural context, Rodgers explains why hierarchical ideas gained prominence, despite the existence of opposing theories in the literature, and how they resulted in an inhibiting vocabulary that relies more heavily on metaphors than on description.

Such analysis is necessary, Rodgers argues, because it sheds light both on newly proposed scientific models and on future changes in human social structures. Contemporary scientists have begun to challenge the traditional understanding of insect social organization and to propose new interdisciplinary models that combine ideas about social insect and human organizational structure with computer technologies. Without a thorough understanding of how the old models came about, residual language and embedded assumptions may remain and continue to reinforce hierarchical social constructions.

This intriguing interdisciplinary book makes an important contribution to the history -- and future -- of science and sociology.

About the Author

David Auburn is an American playwright whose 2000 play Proof won the Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and was also adapted into a film. He has received the Helen Merrill Playwriting Award and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He lives in Manhattan.

"YOU LOOK FOR PLOTS EVERYWHERE. SECRET AGENDAS."

The Columnist, a new play by Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Auburn (for Proof, 2000), opened this April on Broadway with John Lithgow as Joseph Alsop, a name that meant something in the 1950s and 60s but probably doesn't mean much to most of us any more. Alsop was 100% Blue Blood. A descendant of James Monroe and Teddy Roosevelt and educated at Groton and Harvard, he was a syndicated news columnist, whose influence over American presidents and foreign policy stretched across four decades. He was a life-long conservative but he supported young Jack Kennedy because of friendship and continued to advise him throughout his presidency. He pressured Johnson to persist in Viet Nam but already by then Alsop seemed a dinosaur in the strange new landscape of anti-war protest. There is an effective scene in the play where Alsop, often not a nice man at all, calls the editor of the New York Times to talk him into firing David Halberstam, who, at 31, is about to win a Pulitzer Prize for his on-site reporting of that war's catastrophes. (Alsop, by the way, envied Halberstam for winning the prize he never succeeded in winning himself.)

What makes Alsop a fitting subject for a Broadway play is the contrast between his personal life and his public one. He was a homosexual --this in an age where to admit it would have meant professional suicide. The first scene in the play shows Alsop in bed in Moscow with his young Russian guide. His tryst comes back to bite him later on. Photographs are circulated of the two of them in bed and the Russians threaten to expose him if he doesn't play along with them, but he tells them to go ahead and expose him, see if he cares. He probably married to hide his homosexuality: it was a disastrous choice, both for him and his bride. The scenes in the play depicting the marriage are painful: he was a cruel and indifferent husband, and the marriage eventually went up in smoke. He didn't treat his brother Stewart any better, although Stewart was his partner in the column for thirteen years.

Eventually he begins to fall apart. He's still writing his columns and he still takes junkets abroad to find material but his brother Stewart catches on to how sour he has become: "What's the point?" Stewart asks him, "You don't listen to me. You don't listen to anyone. I don't know why you bother to go on these trips. You never change your mind, and you sit with the same old fossils peddling the same old c**p. . . ." Andrei, the Russian he once bedded, knows too. "I think you hate America more than anyone at home does," he says. "You look for plots everywhere. Secret agendas."

Auburn doesn't use Alsop's life to make points about how life-destroying it was to Alsop to have to hide his homosexuality, although it was, nor does he set out to make any grand point about how influence corrupts or fame destroys. At the end of the play, we know a lot more about what makes Joseph run, but he's still running, still there, on the phone to his editor, asking for a delay in delivering his copy for the next column, saying he's got new ideas he wants to follow up on.

Feels half-finished

"The Columnist" presents an interesting man, and does not explore him enough.

Auburn takes on the life of Joe Alsop, a columnist whose influence in the middle of the last century is hard to comprehend in this modern era of specialized, sliced-up bits of media. Alsop could actually change policy, and make or destroy careers with his words, and he loved that power. He also saw it as a great responsibility.

Much of the story revolves around Alsop's very closeted homosexuality and how it would be used against him. But Auburn does not delve deeply enough into Alsop's life, or tell us enough about the many facets of his personality, to make us care all that much.

The mind is very wild. The human experience is full of unpredictability and paradox, joys and sorrows, successes and failures. We can’t escape any of these experiences in the vast terrain of our existence. It is part of what makes life grand—and it is also why our minds take us on such a crazy ride. If we can train ourselves through meditation to be more open and more accepting toward the wild arc of our experience, if we can lean into the difficulties of life and ride of our minds, we can become more settled and relaxed amid whatever life brings us.

There are numerous ways to work with the mind. One of the most effective ways is through the tool of sitting meditation. Sitting meditation opens us to each and every moment of our life. Each moment is totally unique and unknown. Our mental world is seemingly predictable and graspable. We believe that thinking through all the events and to-dos of our life will provide us with ground and security. But it’s all a fantasy, and this very moment, free of conceptual overlay, is completely unique. It is absolutely unknown. We’ve never experienced this very moment before, and the next moment will not be the same as the one we are in now. About the Author
Pema Chödrön

Ani Pema Chödrön was born Deirdre Blomfield-Brown in 1936, in New York City. She attended Miss Porter's School in Connecticut and graduated from the University of California at Berkeley. She taught as an elementary school teacher for many years in both New Mexico and California. Pema has two children and three grandchildren.

While in her mid-thirties, Ani Pema traveled to the French Alps and encountered Lama Chime Rinpoche, with whom she studied for several years. She became a novice nun in 1974 while studying with Lama Chime in London. His Holiness the Sixteenth Karmapa came to Scotland at that time, and Ani Pema received her ordination from him.

Pema first met her root guru, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, in 1972. Lama Chime encouraged her to work with Rinpoche, and it was with him that she ultimately made her most profound connection, studying with him from 1974 until his death in 1987. At the request of the Sixteenth Karmapa, she received the full bikshuni ordination in the Chinese lineage of Buddhism in 1981 in Hong Kong.

Ani Pema served as the director of Karma Dzong in Boulder, Colorado until moving in 1984 to rural Cape Breton, Nova Scotia to be the director of Gampo Abbey. Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche gave her explicit instructions on establishing this monastery for western monks and nuns.

Ani Pema currently teaches in the United States and Canada and plans for an increased amount of time in solitary retreat under the guidance of Venerable Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche. She is also a student of Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, the oldest son and lineage holder of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche.

Ani Pema is interested in helping establish Tibetan Buddhist monasticism in the West, as well as continuing her work with western Buddhists of all traditions, sharing ideas and teachings. Her non-profit, The Pema Chödrön Foundation, was set up to assist in this purpose.

She has written several books: The Wisdom of No Escape, Start Where You Are, When Things Fall Apart, The Places that Scare You, No Time To Lose, Practicing Peace in Times of War, How to Meditate, and Living Beautifully. All are available from Shambhala Publications and Sounds True.

Excellent (As Always) - Basics for Beginners, But Also Real Insights for the Longstanding Meditator

Pema Chodron is a master at presenting teachings in a simple and accessible way, so that anyone can read her books and connect with them. The only potential downside is that it's possible to be deceived by the simplicity and overlook the depth of wisdom actually offered. In the case of this book on meditation, it begins with very basic, easy to follow instructions on getting started with a meditation practice focused on the breath. If you are looking for a straightforward little book to help you begin meditating, this is a great one (and Pema offers many meditation CDs that you can use for guidance as well.)

As this book progresses though, it offers many more meditation approaches, and insights that will be useful even to those who have meditated for a long time. Sections 2, 3 and 4 are devoted to 'Working with Thoughts', 'Working with Emotions', and 'Working with Sense Perceptions', and in each she invites us to actually use these as 'objects of meditation' - to invite them into our meditation and work with them as the foundation for our practice, rather than judging them as 'bad' and trying to push them out. This 'friendliness' as she puts it, really changes everything, and offers us the potential for deep understanding and healing. She offers many personal stories, and anecdotes from students, to support how powerful this can be.

In the final section of the book, 'Opening Your Heart to Include Everything', Pema connects meditation to the awakening or enlightenment process. This is perhaps the most 'Buddhist' section in the book, although really I feel anyone of any faith interested in spiritual meditation will find much value here (as with most of Pema's books, this one is not targeted to those who define themselves as 'Buddhist'.) Pema offers insight into how to work with our biggest challenges in life as objects of meditation, and even to view them as opportunities for enlightenment. She discusses the role of belief in practice, and how to examine the 'firmness' we find in our minds whenever we are gripping a belief as reality. She discusses working with 'groundlessness', and the way of the boddhisattva, or as she defines it, 'becoming a completely loving person.'

So overall, this is a great little book for anyone interested in learning to meditate, or needing to break through barriers in their own meditation practice. If you have already read a lot of Pema's book there may not be anything new here, but as always it is well done and has a lovely transmission behind it. If you are new to her work, and certainly if you are new to Buddhism, this book is a wonderful place to start.

Mindful Meditation

For most of us mortals, meditation is difficult. I've been at it off and on (mostly off, if I'm honest) for the last twenty years. The problem is, I've never found a proper way in. With Chodron's kind and gentle book, I am now thinking about what meditation is and what it does in a new way, and have been able to sustain and enrich my practice in a way that I will stick with. I'm truly grateful.

beneficial changes in neuroanatomy of the brain

Reading Pema Chödrön's book inspired me to meditate. I like her kindness, lack of rigidity, down-to-earth approaches. Different from the fanaticism associated with Transcendental Meditation that I tried more than two decades ago. - As a neuroscientist, I am intrigued by the mediation-associated changes of the actual neuroanatomy of the brain. Quoting en.wikipedia: "..These changes were distinguished by density increases in grey matter regions and white matter pathways in the brains of individuals who meditate in comparison to individuals who do not. ...There is also evidence to suggest meditation plays a protective role against the natural reduction in grey matter volume associated with aging. One study found evidence that Zen meditators experienced a slower age related decline rate for cerebral gray matter volume in the putamen which plays a role in learning, cognitive flexibility and attentional processing [14] This could suggest a better attentiveness in aging meditators versus non-meditators...

{My Thoughts} - “quixotic [kwik-sot-ik] – exceedingly idealistic; unrealistic and impractical.”

Chuck and Ajax are partners in this book. Chuck is Ajax handler and well, they have bonded a lot. Their bond is incredible and each would follow the other where ever they may choose to lead them. The trust of a dog and its handler shows no bounds and that is proven throughout this book.

A vast majority of the book is getting to understand the relationship between Ajax and Chuck and then the rest of those that are serving right along side of them. Ajax is a wonderful dog with a bright future if he and Chuck can manage to survive the war that is taking place around them.

In his down time he reads the book called Don Quixote and ends up going on a similar type journey. If you’d like to find out what happens on their adventure during the Vietnam War you will need to read the book. It is well worth the read for any child that is interested in learning things about the Vietnam War. It has some factual information thrown in with the fiction of the story. I look forward to letting my child read this book in the very near future.
