My girls LOVE Puppy Place!
By TimberMom
My 8 y/o daughter LOVES Puppy Place chapter books. Even her older sister "borrows" these books when nobody's looking to read them. Both girls can read at a much higher level but they love these books for their fun story lines and cute puppy characters. They are an easy read and they can zip through these books in no time. When we don't buy them here, they snap them up from the library by the dozens and plow through them. They love that puppy characters from other/earlier books are used in newer books, which rewards their loyalty to the series. Each book involves children finding a "furever" home for a rescued or lost puppy -- which is a story line all of us can get behind. I have to admit that I had never read one myself until Mocha, which we read aloud at bedtime each night over Christmas break (when we had the time!). It was a good story and I can see why the girls go back to Puppy Place books time and time again.

Thank you Mark, for putting this book together
By Ignacio
This is a must have book for any Dynamics GP user. It will give you the tools to build really impresive reports using basic Excel funcionality.

In fact, writing reports in Report Writer or similar tools is not longer the best way to go, since you can not easily export and analyze the information in those static reports. The way to go is to use Excel to all your reporting needs. With this book any user can learn how to connect to the Database and build from simple tabular reports to complex dashboards. The beauty in all these is that you can refresh the data in seconds, getting real time information every time. (and of course, you can print it if you need to!)

I would recommend buying this book first, and once you are familiar using Basic Excel to produce reports, then you buy a PowerPivot book that will extend your knowledge and power to unprecedented places.

The future in reporting: Excel and PowerPivot.

By the way, this book will help any ERP user, from SAP to Oracle. It is not only for the Dynamics GP user.

Have fun!

Sex, Lies and Excel Reports
By Jivtesh Singh
Mark Polino did a couple of sessions on Excel Reporting with Dynamics GP at Convergence 2013. One of the sessions was titled "Sex, Lies and Excel Reports" - and it was one of the highest rated sessions at Microsoft Convergence.

Now Mark's written a book about the same topic so you can read, and apply the tricks at your own pace. If you work with Dynamics GP you need this book.

To make full use of the book, you need to practice as you read the book. I was initially just reading the book - but once I started practicing, the power of excel with GP started hitting home. I actually practiced the examples in this book using Excel 2010. So you can still benefit from the excellent examples in the book even if you haven't moved to Excel 2013. In fact looking at some of the new features highlighted in the book - I recently updated to Excel 2013.

Mark is a best selling author in the Microsoft Dynamics world - and his writing never gets boring. He doesn't expect the readers to know everything, and takes you to the journey to create highly usable excel dashboards.

Great Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 and Excel 2013 Resource!
By Belinda, the GP CSI, Allen
My Friend and fellow Microsoft Dynamics GP MVP, Mark Polino write an amazing book. I thought I would share my review with you. If you use Excel, you should consider adding this book to your bookshelf!

This is a great step by step guide for a tool that almost everyone owns and uses, "Excel."

I'm excited to have this book in my library. Pivot Tables are such a powerful tool, and this book guides readers through steps that are both easy to understand and duplicate. With the focus being on Excel 2013, this is a great tool for any Excel user.

As I started writing this review, I made notes of my favorite topics and found too many to list here so I just grabbed my top 5:

*Security
*Manual vs. Automatic Refresh
*PowerPivot
*GP Drillbacks
*Conditional Formatting

This is a Great Excel Resource!

Entropy Coders of the H.264/AVC Standard: Algorithms and VLSI Architectures (Signals and Communication Technology), by Xiaohua Tian, Thinh

This book presents a collection of algorithms and VLSI architectures of entropy (or statistical) codecs of recent video compression standards, with focus on the H.264/AVC standard. For any visual data compression scheme, there exists a combination of two, or all of the following three stages: spatial, temporal, and statistical compression. General readers are first introduced with the various algorithms of the statistical coders. The VLSI implementations are also reviewed and discussed. Readers with limited hardware design background are also introduced with a design methodology starting from performance-complexity analyses to software/hardware co-simulation. A typical design of the Contextbased Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coding (CABAC) encoder is also presented in details. To support System-on-Chip design environment, the CABAC design is wrapped with a SoC-based Wishbone system bus interface.

Mingus Speaks, by John Goodman

Charles Mingus is among jazz’s greatest composers and perhaps its most talented bass player. He was blunt and outspoken about the place of jazz in music history and American culture, about which performers were the real thing (or not), and much more. These in-depth interviews, conducted several years before Mingus died, capture the composer’s spirit and voice, revealing how he saw himself as composer and performer, how he viewed his peers and predecessors, how he created his extraordinary music, and how he looked at race. Augmented with interviews and commentary by ten close associates—including Mingus’s wife Sue, Teo Macero, George Wein, and Sy Johnson—Mingus Speaks provides a wealth of new perspectives on the musician’s life and career.

As a writer for Playboy, John F. Goodman reviewed Mingus’s comeback concert in 1972 and went on to achieve an intimacy with the composer that brings a relaxed and candid tone to the ensuing interviews. Much of what Mingus shares shows him in a new light: his personality, his passions and sense of humor, and his thoughts on music. The conversations are wide-ranging, shedding fresh light on important milestones in Mingus’s life such as the publication of his memoir, Beneath the Underdog, the famous Tijuana episodes, his relationships, and the jazz business.

From Booklist
Longtime jazz writer Goodman maintained a relationship with protean composer and bassist Charles Mingus during the last decade of the controversial musician’s life (he died in 1979) and conducted interviews with Mingus (albeit with the interviewer often too intrusive and Mingus often turning the questions inside out), his wife, Sue; and a number of musical and personal associates. Goodman had long contemplated publishing a book, which, after several transformations, has evolved into this oddly organized but invaluable volume. The tempestuous (iconoclastic, contentious, contradictory, infuriating) Mingus was sui generis as a musician and as an individual. His speaking style, presented here in as-good-as-it’s-possible-to-get transcriptions, was as singular as his musical voice, and jazz lovers have not heretofore been able to hear it this purely. Mingus’ own memoir, Beneath the Underdog (1971), though a staple, is famously unreliable, making this present addition to the jazz library, including Mingus on the history and theory of music, the business, the so-called avant-garde, race, sex, and his forerunners and contemporaries, all the more essential. --Mark Levine

Review
"Makes for fascinating reading."--Jack Shakely"Foreword Reviews" (06/01/2013)

From the Inside Flap
"I was privileged to be a close friend of the magnetically original composer, bassist, and leader CharlesMingus, whose deeply energizing music has never left me and many, many others around the world. Mingus was singularly absorbing off the stand and now in this historic book Mingus Speaks, primarily a series of interviews by John Goodman, who as we see is a listener to the music burning to be a soul mate of Charles Mingus as this book proceeds.

The multidimensional inner Mingus who created what he called, not jazz—jazz he said to me once was too limited a description—he created what he called ‘Mingus music.’ And much of the material here, in the book, has never been available before. For it so reveals and multi-dimensionally explains much of the music, and as long as there is jazz, Mingus speaks for the enthralling listeners around the world and—and I mean this—as they become his music. A book unlike any I’ve seen on the history of jazz.” —Nat Hentoff, author of At the Jazz Band Ball: Sixty Years on the Jazz Scene

“In words as in music, Mingus could erupt like a geyser speaking in tongues. These interviews let you experience his volatile, high-pressure flow of acute insights and outrageous conjectures.” —Gene Santoro, author of Myself When I Am Real: The Life and Music of Charles Mingus

"There are many Mingus voices in these interviews: poet, prophet, prolix raconteur, anguished, sometimes angry artist. The early '70s was a dark period in Charles' life and career, a time when he had stopped composing and was trying to find his way—here through the torrents and thickets of language." —Sue Mingus

A Worthy Addition to the Biographies on Charles Mingus.
By Gavin
There are some great interviews with Mr. Mingus here some are abstract and some are direct. Read this in small does to fully absorb the meanings and sometimes arcane thinking. Mingus was a very intelligent and complex individual who was very sensitive and aware of his surroundings and the times in which he lived. This is a great addition to the straight forward biographies on Mingus. If you're a fan of his music, this book is a must. Well edited.

Mingus Speaks
By Renetta DeBlase
I thoroughly enjoyed reading John Goodman's publication about interviews he conducted with Charles Mingus between 1972 and 1974, a difficult but very productive period in the artist's life. The author recorded his interviews totalling about 24 hours in New York restaurants, clubs, bars and the artist's home and asks the artist to comment about his music, musical training, upbringing during a difficult time in American history, personal difficulties and above all asks the artist to comment on the jazz world and various aspects of this beautiful genre: the critics, the difficulty in getting recorded, the danger of some of the jazz club managers and owners, and above all Mingus' great talent and love of music is revealed in his own words. Mingus was ahead of his time in that he wanted jazz to be respected as an art form and he wanted to establish a music school, much like the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, DC, where inner city children as well as gifted children of all backgrounds can receive a classical training in the arts and be able to accomplish great things as musicians, writers, dancers, etc. So much of his wishes have become a reality and it is important to listen to Mingus' music and keep his name alive, which is always an artist's wish. He died much too early and was truly a jazz musician of the golden era of jazz. Mingus Speaks can be used as a reference in university music departments and African American studies departments and the author knows jazz, having been a music critic and reviewer for Playboy magazine for many years and a great jazz fan.
Mingus Speaks is a worthwhile book to purchase and I recommend it.

From Norvelt to Nowhere (Norvelt Series Book 2), by Jack Gantos

This rocket-paced follow-up to the Newbery Medal–winning novel Dead End in Norvelt opens deep in the shadow of the Cuban missile crisis. But instead of Russian warheads, other kinds of trouble are raining down on young Jack Gantos and his utopian town of Norvelt in western Pennsylvania. After an explosion, a new crime by an old murderer, and the sad passing of the town's founder, twelve-year-old Jack will soon find himself launched on a mission that takes him hundreds of miles away, escorting his slightly mental elderly mentor, Miss Volker, on her relentless pursuit of the oddest of outlaws. But as their trip turns south in more ways than one, it's increasingly clear that the farther from home they travel, the more off-the-wall Jack and Miss Volker's adventure becomes, in From Norvelt to Nowhere, a raucous road novel about roots and revenge, a last chance at love, and the power of a remarkable friendship.

Amazon.com Review
Katherine Applegate Interviews Jack Gantos

Katherine Applegate: Your alter-ego Jackie Gantos is back! Of all his hysterical new antics in From Norvelt to Nowhere, which scene did you have the most fun writing?

Jack Gantos: That’s a tough question. There are so many good scenes. There is the harpoon scene, and the pistol escapade, and the over imbibing, the creepy bathroom stall scene ... I’ll settle on the scene where Miss Volker is using the sandwich bread to wipe the unending tears from her guilty crying while the soggy bread balls roll down her face like they were little white garden snails. That scene sinks into chaos for Jack.

KA: In the new book, Jack and Miss Volker visit some odd historical sites on their wild road trip, including a real ghost town. Is Rugby, Tennessee, still abandoned?

JG: Rugby is a great old town started by Thomas Hughes, who had written Tom Brown's School Days. He traveled from England and began the town which was built on socialist/utopic principles. The town was a perfect fit for Miss Volker’s childhood back story, and it had been abandoned for many years. But it has had a bit of a revival. The fabulous library has always been intact, though it was boarded up for many decades. The town’s origins parallel the origins of Norvelt.

KA: Is there a memorable, silly, or just plain embarrassing question you recall being asked at a school visit?

JG: After a Rotten Ralph presentation a baby-faced first grader stood up and with a very sincere voice asked me what had happened to the real cat that inspired Rotten Ralph. The boy seemed very troubled. I replied as sincerely as possible, "Well, he lived a wonderful life for many, many years until finally ... he expired."

He shifted from foot to foot and thought about that last word. Finally he asked, "What does expired mean?"

I paused. Time was passing. The other kids were getting restless so I got to the point. "It means he died," I said.

He thought about that, then asked, "Well, did you stuff him?"

"I should have," I replied while thinking, dang, I really should have. But it was too late for that.

KA: When you autograph books, you often write "Read or Rot!" Why?

JG: Oh, it’s just a fun little motto that basically boils down to Read books or your brain will Rot. I usually draw a skull and write READ OR ROT! in blood red ink across the forehead. Kids like it.

KA: Writing pre-Newbery. Writing post-Newbery. Any difference?

JG: There are differences but they are all very shadowy. There are no statements to be made about the differences. There are only questions. I honestly don’t spend a lot of time pondering this as I’ll probably invent a problem where none exists.

KA: Where do you keep your Medal?

JG: In the freezer. When I have guests over for dinner and make individual butter pats for each plate I use the medal to imprint the butter. This way the conversation starts off about me.

From School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-Gantos picks up where Dead End in Norvelt (Farrar, 2011) left off. Mr. Spitz is on the run and Miss Volker is the last Norvelt old lady remaining. In the wake of three momentous deaths, young Jack finds himself rushed from one uproarious adventure to another. Accompanying Miss Volker, he traverses the country ostensibly to memorialize Eleanor Roosevelt and Miss Volker's sister. Little does he know, however, that Miss Volker has another agenda. Even though she claims to be a pacifist, she becomes more bloodthirsty at each stop in her efforts to catch the murderous Mr. Spitz. Along the way she teaches Jack (and readers) about the history of the country in colorful and enlightening ways. The book is fast paced and laced with both history lessons and hilarity. The characters, who were so well developed in the first book, return, with perhaps too much reliance on previous developments. This is definitely a follow-up book, rather than one that reads well alone. Fans of Dead End in Norvelt will love reading more about young Jack Gantos and his pal, Miss Volker.-Genevieve Feldman, San Francisco Public Libraryα(c) Copyright 2013. Felt disappointed
By Laurelyn Cooper
When I found out that there was a sequel to "Dead End in Norvelt", I was VERY excited. I loved the first book. The adventures of "The Gantos boy" and Mrs. Volker were awesome. The book "From Norvelt to Nowhere" left me feeling disappointed and somewhat cheated. It seemed to me a "rehashing" of the same type of adventures the main characters had in the first book. Sure, they hit the road, there was mystery and intrigue, but still it seemed "done before". I did enjoy the internal conflicts with the main characters and how it related to Captain Ahab in "Moby Dick". I REALLY enjoyed the historical stories told by Mrs. Volker and her love of books and history. But still I felt disappointed and left wanting for more.

What a long, strange trip it's been...
By Herbie Bookbinder
Before diving in to a mini review of "From Norvelt to Nowhere," here's a little bit of info re: my history with "Dead End in Norvelt."

I work in the Children's Dept. at the Framingham Public Library, and I'll often take out audiobooks to listen to while driving to and from work. Of late, I've enjoyed listening to historical children's lit, with the occasional fantasy thrown in. This past February/March (2013), I checked out DEIN, and realized after the first few chapters that this was the stuff of... well, not quite magic, but pretty close. So much of Jack's antics had me in stitches, and the plot had me guessing so much, that I couldn't wait to listen to the end of the story via audiobook, so I got the hard cover and devoured the last third of the story. I then gave it to my oldest child (a high school junior at the time), and she read the book in about three hours. Then on to my 2nd oldest (an 8th grader at the time), and he alternated between reading and listening to the story. My 8 year old listens to it on occasion at night - she also does a great impression of Bunny's "curse dance" which consists of her skipping and spinning while clapping her hands -, but my 5 year old has yet to experience the sublime madness.

Suffice to say, most of my family love DEIN, and I've recommended it over and over, not to mention having it added to the public school summer reading list in Framingham, MA.

As soon as I finished DEIN, I demanded of the sequel gods to satisfy the hunger for more of Jack's antics in Norvelt. I thought, since "Dead End" took place during summer vacation, that a jaunt during the school year would be a blast. In particular Halloween. So, I hoped for either a prequel that took place during the school year that immediately preceded that memorable summer in '62, or else for a sequel that took place right after particular summer vacation had ended.

You can imagine my delight upon finding out about "From Norvelt To Nowhere" several months ago. I couldn't wait to read it, and I did, a few nights ago.

While I was a bit surprised at the plot, I nonetheless found the book to be delightful, hilarious, educational, frustrating, and bittersweet*, with one of the most "implausible on the one hand/maybe it does work out after all" twists that one can imagine. All I'll say re: this is: Don't think you know what really went down in "Dead End" until you read "From Norvelt."

As for the characters, Jack is his usual endearing and ridiculous self, Miss Volker is typically irascible, and Bunny rules. (Some of the funniest moments in the book center around her, be it through her dialogue, actions, or physical appearance. Perhaps THE funniest moment in the book concerns the possible "Master Plan" that could be in store for her, as outlined by an on-the-run Spizz. Freaking hilarious!) Jack's mother, who was a bit overbearing in the first novel, (no offense Mr. Gantos!) and his Dad don't play nearly as big a part, due to the events that transpire within the book. And, as mentioned, good ol' Spizz is back, as "endearing" as ever.

The one "character" that suffers the most due to her lack of stage time is the town of Norvelt. For, while the antics aboard train and car are enjoyable, they went on a bit too long for my liking. I really missed Norvelt a few chapters after Jack and Miss Volker left, and when I realized that there wouldn't be time for them to return, I felt a bit let down.

Man, I realize that I'm going on, so I should wrap this up. The ending notwithstanding, I really hope for a third Norvelt volume. This needs to be a trilogy. Why? First, because simply put, there's something about trilogies. And more importantly, because Jack Gantos has made Norvelt into a semi-mythic magical realm, where a 12-year-old boy can walk the balance beam between history on the one side, fantasy and imagination on the next, and the crazy/beautiful present day on the other. (Wait... that's three sides, so it can't be a balance beam. A balance triangle? Whatever, I never liked gymnastics nor geometry.)

I don't know how a third book would go down, but it certainly could. Somehow Jack has to end up back in Norvelt for a true goodbye. I mean, you can't leave that garden gnome of a gal pal in the lurch like this, right?

So, one more Norvelt book, Mr. Gantos, if you please! I mean, after all is said and done, Mrs. Roosevelt, Bunny, and especially Norvelt herself, deserve it!

SPOILER!
*The most bittersweet moment: Jack and Miss Volker saying goodbye. "We "made" history!" And they did. That terrific tag-team won the Newbery Medal (with a little help from the author, of course).

Good sequel
By Lesley Buse
This was the second of the two Norvelt books that my sons chose to be our read aloud book for the month of January. We had just finished the first Norvelt book and couldn't wait to hear how the author would continue this tale. While it didn't grab us quite as much, and at times seemed a bit absurd, it was good to know that each character found their happy ending. Well, most of them, anyway. And we had good discussions based on whodunit. You have to read the second if you read the first. And if you didn't read the first, we highly recommend it.

This collection takes the perspective that the historiography of science, technology, and medicine needs a broader approach toward regulation. The authors explore the distinct social worlds involved in regulation, the forms of evidence and expertise mobilized, and means of intervention chosen to tame drugs in factories, consulting rooms and courts.

Review

"Ways of Regulating Drugs presents twelve very wide-ranging, generally excellent, and often quite specialized chapters. ... This is all thought-provoking, quality work. The 'ways of regulating' framework brings wonderfully sophisticated analysis to the history of drug regulation, especially when focused on state, industrial, professional, and juridical actors whose power to create and enforce is evident." - David Herzberg, University at Buffalo, USA

"Ways of Regulating Drugs offers a stimulating history of the pharmaceutical products and industry during the 19th and 20th century. The choice of the authors is to assume different ways of analysing drug trajectories the demonstration is really convincing: it shows that if drugs aren't like other goods and if public health refers to a specific market, their history might not remain at the frontiers of the history of sciences, economic history or political history. The question of drug trajectories and of their regulations has become crucial enough to be liable to resolutely and fruitful multidisciplinary approaches, of which this book is a major issue." - Sophie Chauveau, Gesnerus, 71, (2014)

Operation Crossbow: The Untold Story of the Search for Hitler's Secret Weapons, by Allan Williams

The story of the photographic intelligence work undertaken from a country house at Medmenham, Buckinghamshire, is one of the great lost stories of the Second World War .

At its peak in 1944, almost 2,000 British and American men and women worked at the top-secret Danesfield House, interpreting photographs - the majority stereoscopic so they could be viewed in 3D - to unlock secrets of German military activity and weapons development. Millions of aerial photographs were taken by Allied pilots, flying unarmed modified Spitfires and Mosquitos on missions over Nazi Europe. it was said that an aircraft could land, the photographs be developed and initial interpretation completed within two hours - marking the culmination of years of experiments in aerial intelligence techniques.

Their finest hour began in 1943, during the planning stages of the Allied invasion of Europe, when Douglas Kendall, who masterminded the interpretation work at Medmenham, led the hunt for Hitler's secret weapons. Operation Crossbow would grow from a handful of photographic interpreters to the creation of a hand-picked team, and came to involve interpreters from across the Medmenham spectrum, including the team of aircraft specialists led by the redoubtable Constance Babington Smith. In November that year, whilst analysing photographs of Peenemunde in northern Germany, they spotted a small stunted aircraft on a ramp. This intelligence breakthrough linked the Nazi research station with a growing network of sites in northern France, where ramps were being constructed aligned not only with London, but targets throughout southern Britain.

Through the combined skill and dedication of the Crossbow team and the heroism of the Allied pilots, throughout late 1943 and 1944 V-weapon launch sites were located and through countermeasures destroyed, saving hundreds of thousands of lives, and changing the course of the war.

Operation Crossbow is a wonderful story of human endeavour and derring-do, told for the first time.

From School Library Journal
Gr 4-7-In this installment in the series, Mass continues to weave reality with fantasy, action, and plot twists to draw readers into her story. The Last Present pairs 13-year-old best friends, Amanda and Leo, to unravel the mystery of why 10-year-old Grace has become catatonic following their friend David's bar mitzvah. While visiting Grace, Angelina D'Angelo appears as her nurse, and the friends know that the mysterious old woman with special powers is involved. Amanda and Leo are instructed to journey to the past, specifically to Grace's previous birthday parties, to undo a curse that has befallen her. But, do they have enough information to reverse it? Angelina has a habit of leaving out important pieces of a story in order to get her way. With the help of their friends, Amanda and Leo are up to the challenge and begin their time-travel adventure. Woven seamlessly into this fantasy are the realistic issues that tweens encounter. Young love, sibling rivalry, and embarrassing parents are as much a part of this adventure as the time travel. Although part of a series, The Last Present can stand on its own, but readers will want to find the earlier titles once they have visited Willow Falls.-Annette Herbert, F. E. From Booklist
Amanda and Leo step into the spotlight again, but soon Grace, a friend’s younger sister, falls into a trancelike state. Angelina sends Amanda and Leo back in time to make subtle changes on Grace’s birthdays, but as they learn more about the elderly, magical woman, they begin to doubt their mission. Readers will enjoy catching up with their favorite characters from previous books as much as following the current adventure and the ongoing mystery. In the end, there is a sense of closure, at least for the Angelina story line. Still, a new, magically gifted character could mean more adventures in the River Falls series. Time Travel Done Well
By Pop Bop
MILD SPOILER, BUT NO MORE THAN WHAT'S IN THE BOOK DESCRIPTION, ABOVE: Wendy Mass's other Willow Falls book, "11 Birthdays", has friends Amanda and Leo caught in a "Groundhog Day" cycle where they must keep reliving their shared eleventh birthday days until they fix their fractured friendship and can move on. In this latest Willow Falls book, Amanda and Leo don't stay in the same day over and over. Rather, in order to save their friend Grace, they have to travel back in time to each of Grace's previous birthdays in order to right a magical wrong.

I'm not a huge fan of time travel fiction, mostly because the complications and the explanatory folderol that are required tend to overwhelm most authors' ability to relate a coherent entertaining tale. Not a problem here. Ms. Mass remains a master at handling magic, time travel and complicated coincidence/plotting while still telling an engaging story.

Maybe this all works so well because there is more going on than just the time travel plot. Amanda and Leo are very strong characters and their relationship is complicated and full of authentic detail. So, instead of two stick figures who are just moved around through time by the author, we get two characters whose relationship is interesting above and beyond just driving the plot along. Additionally, Ms. Mass has an eye for the telling detail, observation or grace note that elevates the story beyond just an action/adventure. Further still, the mysterious Angelina, the old woman who holds the key to all of the secrets, drops just enough hints and clues along the way that it is possible to keep track of the action without becoming frustrated.

Since it takes a little while for this book to settle down and get the plot on track, it seems that this volume would appeal most to an adventurous reader who could tolerate a little confusion and ambiguity at the outset. That's especially true if your reader hasn't read "11 Birthdays", since this book takes off right where that one ends and you have to read between the lines a little to catch up on who's who and what's what. That said, this book certainly works as a standalone.

So, engaging characters, pretty sophisticated plot, assured writing from an author with a delicate touch - this seems more than worth a look as a older elementary/early middle grade choice.

Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

the last present
By My Favorite Pastime
Grace, Connor's sister has gone into a catatonic state and nobody knows why. Connor has no idea about Angelina D'Angelo's interaction with some of his friends in Willow Falls. Angelina has given every child born in Willow Falls words to keep them safe throughout their life. When Grace was born though she was unable to speak the entire set of words because she was interrupted. Angelina has tried for 10 years to make the situation right and has failed. Now Angelina has called on Amanda and Leo to go back in time to each of Grace's birthday parties to find out why Angelina's attempts have failed.

Amanda and Leo find out more about Angelina's past and begin to understand all of the secrets that she keeps from them. In THE LAST PRESENT Amanda, Leo and their friends are now 13 and relationships are starting to change. Amanda and Leo are moving from being best friends into exploring a new relationship as boyfriend and girlfriend.

I've enjoyed all of Wendy Mass's books that I have read, but I did miss the book before THE LAST PRESENT which was 13 GIFTS. I'm afraid I was a bit lost in this book, but I did go buy 13 GIFTS and am looking forward to reading it. THE LAST PRESENT reveals Angelina and Willow Falls history and answers many questions for the reader as well as for Amanda and Leo. I've loved reading this series and reading about the friendships that have developed. Add in a bit of time travel and you have a fun/sweet series that made me smile.

OMG AN AMAZING BOOK!!!
By Leanne
This is seriously one of the best books I have ever read. The previous book finishes with 10 year old Grace being rushed to hospital... on her birthday!
If you have read the 3 previous book or even 1 you will know Angila D'Angelo has a thing with birthdys (If you didnt know that "SPOILER ALERT!")
After being told Amanda and Leo rush to the hospital knowing this has been Angilas doing.
The only way to cure Grace is to go back in time and stop Conar from ruining the parties, Amanda and Leo or should I say Amy and Leon (it all comes clear in the book) have to fix Graces parties, but with a whole lot of added drama can they actually do it? Read and Find out!

The Tamarack Murders: A Bo Tully Mystery (Sheriff Bo Tully Mysteries Book 5), by Patrick F. McManus

Bo Tully is a renowned sheriff because he always gets his man—whether by the book or otherwise. Bo Tully, sheriff of Blight County, Idaho, has seen his share of small-town crime. Fact is, everyone in the area knows Tully, and knows his Blight Way of doing things. But when he and his deputy hike into the deep woods, tracking a suspected bank robber, little do they realize that they are about to witness a murder—and that, in turn, will lead the sheriff on an intricate trail, a series of twists and turns demanding his utmost attention and keenest crime-solving abilities. Along the way, Tully has to deal with the likes of a shadowy local named Gridley Shanks, who seems to have a spider web of connections throughout town; two out-of-town elk hunters who don’t know much about elk hunting, but are tied to the murder; an elderly couple who end up dead while caring for a rundown mansion and property out of town; a sassy assistant named Daisy; an attractive, tough FBI agent named Angie, who suddenly finds herself involved in her first murder investigation; and a host of other characters. There’s also the case of missing loot, which no one can find—at least, until Tully puts his mind to it. Will Tully get his man (or men) this time? Does the Blight Way ever fail? Read another page-turning mystery turned misadventure by New York Times bestselling author, Patrick F. McManus.

Bo Tully, sheriff of Blight County, Idaho, is tracking the gang who robbed a local bank. Tully thinks the money was handed off during the getaway but doesn’t know to whom. It may have been to a charming local hustler named Gridley Shanks, but there are also questions regarding two out-of-state elk hunters. In his fifth adventure, Tully mobilizes a ragtag group of his own deputies and a handful of “civilian deputies” to help solve the case. McManus is best known as a humorist who writes about the outdoors, and certainly his sly wit is omnipresent in his Tully novels. Readers who enjoy Bill Crider’s Sheriff Dan Rhodes mysteries or Steven F. Havill’s Posadas County novels will find much to enjoy here, as McManus captures the rhythms of small-town life and its citizenry in all their resplendent quirkiness. For readers who like mayhem presented with a smile. --Wes Lukowsky

What a let down
By Amazon Customer
I have to say I love Pat McManus and have read with joy almost everything he has written. This book, however, was way off the mark. It just seemed like the laziest effort of a book in a series that I have ever read. The story was disjointed and there was no build up of any mystery to be solved. All of the quirky attributes of the returning characters seemed to be hurriedly glossed over. Any background is quickly inserted in what feels like confusing afterthoughts. The writing and the narrative feel clumsy and forced.
While Bo Tully has been dapper and charming in the past, in this novel he's lost all of his charm and comes across as not even a one pick-up line bore. The small part with him hitting on the school principal seemed to be just thrown in for who knows what reason - to wrap up the ending? What about the "dark cloud" that Etta forecasts? Nothing.
Sad to say this this book is as flat and unentertaining as anything I can remember reading. Disappointing to say the least knowing what McManus is capable of.

Sorry to Say It...Save your money...
By Trakehner
I'm a big Patrick McManus fan, I especially like his Bo Tully books...except this one.

It's short, very short...more of a longish short story than his regular Bo Tully/Blight Way books. At least 100 pages shorter than his normal mysteries.

He was sleep-walking through this one...he included the cast of characters from his other books...so everyone was there, but almost a parody. His father Pap was along, but barely, Clarence wiggling into Scaggs arms, Dee Dee saw Pap off, Pat's mom was given credit for making preserves, Tracker Dave and his restaurant food, Lurch, Daisy etc. etc. etc made appearances, but more like everybody had to show up but not add to the story....but they didn't do anything this book but act as weak copies repeating the same lines in past books. It was a very very weak effort.

Even a bad Patrick McManus book is readable...but I kept waiting for something to happen, to have the characters become alive as they have in the past. Not this time, everyone was barely going through the motions...and it showed.

I Wouldn't Purchase This Book
By Barbara A Klein
"The Tamarack Murders" by Patrick F. McManus is one of the Bo Tully Mystery Series. I thought I would enjoy this book because McManus is supposed to be a writer who invokes a sense of humor in his books. I DO love a good murder mystery, but this was not a good murder mystery and I think I missed the humor.
I'm sorry to say that, but there were so many characters written into this story that I had a hard time following. Also the book was super short which in my mind didn't give the novelist time to flesh out the story enough to entice me to read this book word for word. I must admit that I began skimming the pages just to be through with it.

I would not recommend purchasing this book. It was not at all a book that I would lend anyone along with a good review. I received a free print copy of this book in return for my honest review from the publisher, Skyhorse Publishing, Inc. and Night Owl Reviews. The opinions expressed here are my own.
