Exotic fly fishing knowledge

Bought it knowing I might never get to Africa, though I do know a bit about fly fishing and ichthyology. Lots of basic fly 101 stuff, but then you get to the wild and interesting fish of Africa, some are familiar (i.e. trout, carp, bass, saltwater) though many are not (jackfish, many of the ciclids) and details of how to catch them...now just need a trip to Africa to test it out LOL. Balancing this against the century old Holder book is a fun exercise too.

About the Author
Sarvananda was born and educated in Glasgow. In 1987, after being ordained into the Triratna Buddhist Order he moved to Norwich where he spends his time teaching Buddhism and meditation and writing plays for BBC Radio. This is his second book.

California dreamin'

Dawn used to be a California girl until her parents' divorce. Then her mother packed up Dawn and her brother Jeff to move back her old hometown in Connecticut. Eventually Dawn made friends and a new life for herself but her brother did not and returned to California making the family even more divided than before. As the story opens Dawn is leaving to spend her spring break back in California with her father and brother and her old friends. Before long she finds that in her heart she is still a California girl but that she also loves her new life in Connecticut which leaves her with a huge problem - should she get on the plane at the end of her vacation or not?

This is #23 in the popular BABYSITTERS CLUB series. The books in this series focus on a group of young teenage girls in a small Connecticut town. Each book in the series focuses on one of the girls although each one appears to some extent. Each chapter opens with a handwritten note (journal entry, postcard, letter etc) by one of the girls commenting on the upcoming events. The series overall has several ongoing arcs that are moved along in a chronological manner but each book could be read and enjoyed independently or out of series order. The reading level of this series is 4th grade and appeals primarily to 3rd through 5th grade girls. The stories themselves are well written, the characters are believeable and appealing, remaining consistent throughout the series. The situations the girls find themselves in are realistic and dealt with in a reasonable manner.

The series is a bit dated at this point - this particular book was written in 1989 - so that a young reader today might be a bit confused by some of the references to 'current' movies or the relaxed air travel of twenty years ago. Overall though the story itself still speaks to problems faced by many young girls today.

Dawn can't wait for this trip to California. Besides all the sun andfun, it's Dawn's first visit since jeff, moved back to live with their dad.California is better then dawn can remeber it.The beaches are beatiful, Disneyland is a blast, Californians eat heathy food! Plus Dawn's best friend, sunny, has even started up her own baby-sitters club. After one wonderful week, Dawn begins yo think she might want to....stay in California like Jeff. Dawn's a California girl at heart-but could she really leave Stoneybrook for good?

Dawn on the Coast

ISBN 0590420070 - Martin's BSC books tend to remain timeless, overall, despite references to things like VCRs. This and Martin's ability to keep track of details through the series always make her books worth reading.

Dawn's father and brother still live in California, while Dawn and her mother are now living in Stoneybrook. Dawn's got new friends and has settled in happily, but she's very excited to visit sunny California - she won't be the only one who eats healthy food, she loves the warm weather and, most of all, she'll get to see people she loves and misses!

Dawn and Jeff go to Disneyland with their father, they spend time at the beach and Dawn's best friend surprised her with the news that she has started their own babysitters club, called the We-Heart-Kids Club. She enjoys her visit so much that she begins to wonder if she ought to stay in California for good. Making this decision might be the most difficult thing she's ever had to do - and she doesn't have much time to decide.

There are a few moments when you almost have to laugh at the melodrama of young girls, which is nice (and pretty realistic). These books are super quick reads, and well worth picking up!

Benno Torgler is Professor at the QUT Business School, Australian Research Council Future Fellow, and Adjunct Professor at the EBS Universität für Wirtschaft und Recht, Germany. He is also a Research Fellow at the Centre for Research in Economics, Management and the Arts. He is passionate about the sociology of science.

Marco Piatti is a PhD student at the Queensland University of Technology, Australia. His research is in behavioural and experimental economics, specifically in credence good markets, economics of science, microeconometrics and sportometrics. He received his BBus(Econ) with Distinction in 2010 and his Master by Research (Economics) in 2012 from QUT.

Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895–1986) was one of the most influential spiritual teachers of the twentieth century. He traveled and lectured throughout the world until his death at the age of ninety. His talks and works are preserved in more than seventy books.

Insightful but tedious at times

'Can humanity change' is overall a very good book which consists mainly of dialogues between J Krishnamurti and a number of Buddhist scholars (and others including David Bohm) discussing topics central to what the Buddha taught and Krishnamurti's own 'teachings'. It focuses on the similarity between the two and as in his usual style, Krishnamurti deflects the original question asked by Walpola Rahula (ie. Is not your teaching the same as the Buddha's?) because he sees it as irrelevant or inconsequental and goes on to what he sees as more important: why do people compare what he says with what someone has previously said - and more fundamentally, why do we compare at all. Unfortunately the dialogues do tend to become slightly tedious to read, as is sometimes the case when Krishnamurti holds these kinds of discussions, mainly because they become very drawn-out as he attempts to get a certain point across that seems to be far too subtle for the others involved in the dialogue. He also spends a lot of time, in effect, asking the others 'do you see this' ACTUALLY or are you just saying it from memory? - because you have read it somewhere or heard someone say it.

I have given the book four stars because the content of the dialogue is very insightful and of course concerns itself with the most important questions that humanity must consider. Buddhists may also find it very interesting and enlightening to read this, especially the parts where Krishnamurti and Walpola Rahula really getting into the deeper and more subtle parts of these vitally important topics.

In the same way that what Krishnamurti is saying challenges the other participants in the most all-embracing, fundamental way, these dialogues should challenge the reader that is really interested in going beyond their own personal, petty concerns to ask the question: Can I change? thus, can humanity change?

Excellent dialogue!

Dialogues seem to bring out many of Krishnamurti's fine points better than his public talks.

Krishnamurti is not concerned with opinion/conclusions. He is more concerned with your active paticipation and actual perception of things. Therefore, he is not there to offer opinion/conclusions. If you are looking for "answers", you may be disappointed. Because "answers" are too superficial. It is something you can get without being actively paticipating. It is something a lazy mind want.

In the above sense, the whole point of dialogue is to get everybody to actively paticipate the process of investigation right at the moment, while the conversation is going on. In such case, questions are much more imprtant than answers.

Because of this, the book will make sense to you only if you are willing to paticipate the investigation as well. This means, when Krishnamurti ask a question in the book, you as a reader would also actually ask that question to yourself. If you would ask the question to yourself seriously, that means without supplying "second handed answers", without answering the question simply by your opinion/conclusions, but rather to look into the question afresh, then, the meaning of the book will begin to show.
