Introduction

Why Quiet Influence, Why Now?
Do you work in a company? How about in a nonprofit that competes for funding?
Do you work in a government agency with contractors?
Are you an entrepreneur or freelancer who sells products or services?
Are you in technology, engineering, or science?
Do you work in sales, marketing, project management, teaching, medicine, the law, human resources, or administration?

The truth is that everyone in a professional role needs to influence others. From Seoul to Seattle, today’s competitive workplace demands that you influence a variety of situations and people, not once in a while but multiple times a day. Although influence is sometimes about really big issues and opportunities, it is also about nudging change along one small step at a time.
Noted researchers such as Jay Conger (“The Necessary Art of Persuasion”) have found that selling ideas and getting people on board is a process, not an event.1 Influence is not about forcing people to come to see things your way but about learning from others and negotiating a shared solution. This approach is well suited to the introvert temperament. It involves patience, planning, and perseverance. If we all think that the only way to get things done is to shout louder and louder and take up more center-stage space, we’ll miss the opportunities to listen, learn, and respond thoughtfully.
It may be that our society is starting to get this message. Extroverts are slowly (very slowly, some argue) realizing that we stand to lose the wisdom and contributions of more than half of the population if we don’t listen to the introverts in our world. Since the 2009 publication of my last book, The Introverted Leader: Building on Your Quiet Strength (the first book about introverted leaders), a firestorm of other books (including Susan Cain’s 2012 New York Times bestseller Quiet), articles and social media have crusaded for the cause of introverts. I have been gratified to hear the buzz of such conversations everywhere.
Moreover, even though they will never really experience how an introvert truly feels, extroverts are starting to get the differences on a personal level. They push their pens in my hand to sign a copies of The Introverted Leader for their sons, spouses, and siblings, who they never quite understood. Hope for a broader change springs from such a personal connection.
Perhaps the strongest driver for Quiet Influence, however, is how it can contribute to success in today’s shifting workplace. These four trends indicate that the time for Quiet Influence is now:
1. Flattened organizations and complex vendor, supplier, and customer interactions mean that you must, no matter what your position or personality type, be effective at getting your ideas heard. Gone are the days when you can rely on a boss or your boss’s boss to make your case for you. You have to establish critical relationships and communicate key messages yourself.
2. Going global means that you need to find multiple ways to influence an increasingly diverse set of colleagues and customers. For example, your more reflective, low-key influencing approach will be much more effective with your colleagues in Asia than a traditional extroverted one. You can use your Quiet Influence skills to make a difference with those in cultures that value a quieter approach.
3. The virtual world is evolving and ever present. In today’s society, it’s highly unlikely that you can influence a broad group of people without using digital media in purposeful ways. Introverts, as particularly thoughtful users of social media, may well be ahead of the game. They have been drawn to social media because it lets them use their strengths and better manage their communication. You and other Quiet Influencers who have already invested in learning and using social media are poised to effect tomorrow’s change more quickly than influencers who have ignored these technologies.
4. Heightened competition for business and jobs means that companies are seeking suppliers and employees who bring fresh, innovative approaches. The truth is, extrovert-centric self-promotion and loud persuasion are passé. Today, you will stand out from the crowd if you have a knack for building up others and are committed to listening instead of talking.

Because Quiet Influence is already what you do naturally, these trends offer you the impetus to enhance those skills. Your time has come. This book is written to help you and millions of other introverts recognize, develop, and highlight your innate influencing strengths. Together, you make up about 50 percent of the world’s population, and you can make a big difference in organizations and communities around the world. I encourage you to applaud the success of your strengths and practice making a difference without making a lot of noise.
I believe that as these trends intensify, the tide will turn and extroverts will want to learn Quiet Influencing strengths from the introverts they know. Many extroverts recognize that they are more effective, flexible, adaptable influencers when their influencing toolbox includes a wider variety of approaches.
I’ll admit it: I am one such extrovert. I needed to practice how to make a difference without making a lot of noise. For much of my professional life, I went along with the ill-founded belief that the Type A approach, with its emphasis on talking and finding center stage, delivered results. I am a speaker, executive coach, and author whose job it is to influence people to try new approaches in their lives. Of course, I thought, that means being “out there” and being “on.” I moved very fast, did a lot of winging it, and often found a way to attract attention. As I progressed in my career, I embodied the stereotype of the loud, assertive New Yorker I was.
Yet I grew up quietly watching people. My dad, Alvin Boretz, was a TV and film screenwriter, and many of our dinner conversations were about people, their motivations and behavior. Because Dad’s work depended on picking up the nuances of dialogue, the meanings of conversations were of endless interest to our family. It was not unusual to see my extroverted family of four sitting quietly in Cairo’s, our local Italian restaurant, listening to simultaneous conversations around us. On the way home, we would share dialogues we overheard and wonder aloud about the lives and relationships of our fellow diners. The introverts offered few verbal clues, so we had a field day guessing what could have been going on in their lives. Those quieter, low-key families, so different from ours, were especially intriguing to me. What was going on with them?
I embarked on my career and continued to be an observer of introverts. I was still people watching, and the people who continued to intrigue me were the introverts—those people who sometimes struggled in leadership positions even though they had all the power they nedded deep inside. I wrote The Introverted Leader: Building on Your Quiet Strength to give these talented people a guide for being in charge while being themselves.
During the research for that book and in countless interactions since its publication, I have found myself increasingly drawn to the stories and experiences of introverts. The more I speak with, listen to, coach, and write about introverts, the more I appreciate their sensibility. I have realized that the quiet language of the introvert is refreshingly different from my natural outgoing persona, and I recognize that I can incorporate introverted traits and behaviors in order to have a greater impact. For instance, instead of rushing on to that conference call at the last minute, I can spend some quiet time sitting on my deck watching the trees and reflecting on my purpose for the day. Or in lieu of randomly posting something on Facebook, I can think of the other tasks that await me. Or in working through a sticky relationship, I can write out my thoughts to gain clarity on where I stand.
All in all, I recognize that a powerful shift occurs in me when I flow into the less prominent side of my personality. When I choose to embrace my internal energy, I gain deeper insights, delve into my creativity, and become more centered. Jungian psychologists would say that I am releasing a potent force by tapping into the less dominant side of my temperament. I simply see that I have been influenced by the introverts I set out to influence.
Inspired by the Quiet Influencers I have met and the effect they had on me, I turned my attention to the question of how these successful introverts make a difference. How exactly do they challenge the status quo, provoke new ways of thinking, or inspire others to move forward? What inner strengths do they call upon to effect change? What steps do they take to influence others?
In my professional life, I have interacted with thousands of people who deepened my knowledge of the introvert experience and gave me ideas about how to answer these questions. Class discussions, questions after speeches, and problems that surfaced in coaching sessions have all contributed to my understanding and perspective. In my role as an author and journalist, I met a wide range of introverts and have written and been interviewed for a number of articles on the topic of introverts in the workplace for publications such as Forbes, Bloomberg Business Week, and the Wall Street Journal. Through hallway conversations, follow-up emails, and blog comments, I have gained an even deeper understanding about how introverts experience their world and the ways in which they use their natural strengths to get through to people in powerful ways.
I have also been fortunate to be plugged into a vibrant community of Quiet Influencers. I specifically asked these professionals from a wide range of fields and organizations about their approach to influence. this book helped me develop my strengths

Introverts often spend a lot of time thinking about their weaknesses: how terrified they feel at networking events and cocktail parties, how lackluster they might seem compared to those bubbly extroverts. But this book made me realize I have strengths too, strengths that extroverts don't possess. Introverts form a few deep relationships, and extroverts form many shallower relationships. But deep relationships mean a higher ability to influence. This book taught me how to rock my introverted strengths more, use them consciously, not just unconsciously like I have been doing up until now.

Fabulous insights for Introverts in an Extroverted World

Jennifer has created a wonderful resource for anyone who is, knows, or lives or works with introverts.

The Western world is one embedded in extroversion. Work teams typically demand that ideas be presented in confident, charismatic ways. Introverts - like me - are brow-beaten by these demands. We learn ways to demonstrate extroversion to be heard, to have our ideas considered. Afterwards we're exhausted - and it takes a day to recharge from having to leverage ways & skills that are not natural to us.

Jennifer six strengths model provides insights on how introverts can leverage our natural biases and skills to increase our ability to influence others. The model outlines a process that enables introverts to leverage strengths, demonstrate interaction approaches that help get ideas heard, and manage energy at the same time.

One last point - the book provides great examples of how introverts bring value to businesses, customer relationships, and communities. Extroverts might appreciate introverts a bit more after reading this fine book.

Not Just For Introverts - Extroverts Too!

Jennifer Kahnweiler has written an excellent, easy read that helps introverts learn how to use their natural strengths effectively in our Type A workplaces. Furthermore, for those extroverts out there, this book is almost more necessary to read - she does a great job of showing how the two worlds bridge and the pitfalls of spending too much time in either world. The benefits of balance are clear in Quiet Influence. This is a cutting edge topic that will be even more important as Gen Y and Millenials enter the workforce - where individual strength and personality are even more valued.

No longer intimidated by the grill...

I don't watch the Real Housewives of New Jersey (or any others in the franchise) but I had heard about Teresa Giudice from a close friend of mine who swore by her cookbooks. We had a BBQ this weekend and I decided to go and purchase this book and see if I could handle the grill by my lonesome. Verdict? I am now officially the grill mistress. The recipes are easy to read and a breeze to follow. And everything turned out delicious. I'm looking forward to trying to use the grill to make a pizza! Maybe I'll try that next weekend. Until then, I think I might have to look into Teresa's other cookbooks and see if they are as amazing as this one. Healthy definitely equals delicious! Teresa proves that.

Great Rercipes

Wasn't sure this Texan could follow these Italian recipes but I found out they are simple. I loved the Grilled Peperonata, Fabellini Glazed Carrots, Shrimp Skewers with Salsa Verde. The ingredients were available at the supermarket. My original reason for purchasing the kindle version of the book was to challenge myself to a different way of cooking. While many of the recipes are not new, Teresa's versions are delicious. If you enjoy Italian, get this book.

This well-crafted novel from Gornick (A Private Sorcery) tells the story of a family knocked off-balance with warm assurance. Myra is the definition of graceful aging, but her carefully structured life is interrupted when her son and his family move back in with her while his wife, Rachida, completes her medical training. At the same time, Myra hires Eva, a Peruvian Jewish woman just arrived in New York, as a housemaid and nanny. Eva is sweet and diligent, but Myra, a psychologist, quickly notices signs of troubling behavior. Eva's issues and their causes hover in the background as the marriage of Myra's son, Adam, sputters and her daughter, Caro, successful in her career but stalled otherwise, tries to work through her own problems. The novel builds to a dramatic crisis, but it maintains a level tone throughout; sometimes this formality or equanimity takes away from the reading experience, as when conversations seem unnaturally articulate, but in general, turning the pages is a pleasure. There is betrayal, sadness, and tragedy, and particular richness in details about the varieties of the characters' Jewish experiences—Eva and Rachida come from communities in Peru and Morocco, respectively, while Myra's family is ambivalent about religion—that provide interest and structure, but apart from all this, it's the realistic portrayal of relationships and personalities that carries the book. About the Author
Lisa Gornick is the author of A Private Sorcery, a novel. Her stories have appeared in Agni, Confrontation, The Massachusetts Review, Slice, and other journals; have received awards, including Best American Short Stories Distinguished Story of the year; and have been named a finalist in the Glimmer Train Fiction Open and a winner of the Summer Literary Seminars Unified Literary Contest. Her essays have been published in The Huffington Post, The Sun, and various psychoanalytic journals. She has a BS from Princeton, and a PhD in clinical psychology from Yale, and is a graduate of the writing program at New York University and the psychoanalytic training program at Columbia, where she is currently on the faculty.

Tinderbox is a book club lover's dream come true. it has everything---mother/daughter issues; the incursion of the inexplicable (and often evil) event; loss; many opportunities to discuss the difference between appearance and reality (if there is one); the impact of the insoluble past on the present; a clash of cultures, angles of vision, history (real and imagined); guilt (real and imagined) and the impact of social position.

Order several large, large pizzas and some other stuff. Your book club may be camping out in your living room for the weekend.

Quite enjoyable

I'm truly amazed to find so many "haters" for this novel. Then again, I too, have read great reviews, purchased a novel, and wondered what all the hoopla was about.

Since the storyline has been put under the microscope by lovers and haters of the book, I won't go into the story.

Personally, it gripped me from the beginning and I read it with the kind of mounting horror that was felt by the person who hired the very unbalanced maid. Not knowing the author was herself a psychologist made it a better read for me as I was astounded as to how she portrayed the trauma the maid had suffered and how the true story finally was told.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading thrillers. If you worry about the type of details some of the naysayers pointed out, you probably will not enjoy the book so don't buy it! On the other hand, if you are the type of person who can just allow yourself to relax into a very different type of narrative about psychosis, I think you will find your money was well spent.

Oh, are the single star reviewers themselves editors? I was amazed at how critical so many people were in thinking they knew better than whomever had done the editing on this book. Perhaps they should consider taking up editing as a career.

Packed with pleasures

This is a wonderfully packed book, full of satisfactions, at least for this reader. Other reviewers have already suggested its story and referred to its cast of characters, so I'll do no more than briefly name a few of its many pleasures: A one-word title and all it promises. Short chapters, almost always welcome to me. The whole book is compact, brief and full of life, without waste, like a sustainable eco-system. Short title. Short chapters. Short book. Perfect. It moves along briskly. The talk is terrific. Letters play a role, too unusual today in life and in fiction. Its psychological wisdom is deep. Its characters are full, even as their stories unfold with economy and restraint. Some appear and disappear, just as characters in our own lives do. And the story is not without alluring exotica, with brief stops in Peru and Morocco, and running riffs on American westerns, Frank Lloyd Wright, and psychotherapy. All this and more in a small space that rewards the reader's utmost attention. It all fits. With attention, even what may seem wayward, like an excursus on South American Jewish Indians, is true to a main thrust of the book--outsiders enter a little world (like a family), fertilize it, ignite it, and depart, leaving that world altered. It's very tight and true to itself, and, I think, to our lives. All carefully designed and crafted, with clear lines --like a Frank Lloyd Wright house.

I've been little puzzled by some commentators who have expected or described a thriller. That's not the book I read, though it does have its suspense. But, even better, one of the beauties of this book is that the author lets her story unfold, like some of the best novels, out of a small event in the life of a family. Think on the small scale of something even like Pride and Prejudice, where everything follows from no more than the little announcement that someone new is moving to the neighborhood. So it is with Tinderbox, which is, above all, the story of a family and a home, its old growth, undergrowth , overgrowth, and new growth. No thriller, but thrilling in its own flammable intricacies, perhaps even like your family or mine.

Back to that great title. I once read that John Irving said that the working title of every book he started was "Great Expectations," which couldn't capture writerly aspirations any better. But "Tinderbox" is another title that any book could desire. What writer doesn't want to make something incendiary, smoldering, and illuminating--between covers and within the reader? If families are tinderboxes, so are books--boxlike, compact, packed. This one is. Reader: supply match; strike.

About the Author
Karl Widerquist is Associate Professor at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar. He holds two doctorates one in Political Theory from Oxford University (2006) and one in Economics from the City University of New York (1996). He is coauthor of Economics for Social Workers , coeditor of The Ethics and Economics of the Basic Income Guarantee , coeditor of Alaska's Permanent Fund Dividend: Assessing its Suitability as a Model (Palgrave Macmillan), and coeditor of Exporting the Alaska Model: Adapting the Permanent Fund Dividend for Reform around the World (Palgrave Macmillan). He is a founding editor of the journal Basic Income Studies and has published scholarly articles on economics, politics, and philosophy in journals such as Political Studies, Utilitas, Eastern Economic Journal, Politics and Society , and Politics, Philosophy, and Economics .

Painless read, painlessly practical

There's so much to say about this book - first, don't be fooled by the easy read, it is packed with practical advice and easy-to-use tools. Second, there wasn't one part that wasn't applicable to my work, I could fit into any "from the field" example and/or case study. Third, and finally, I am in the midst of conducting performance evaluations with my team of directors and will literally begin using these tools tomorrow. Thank you Marnie!!

How Most Supervisors Could Improve their Evaluation of Employees

Marnie's book is a guide for for busy supervisors who can't seem seem to get it together enough to have sometimes difficult conversations with employees whose performance needs to "improve immediately." She helps put in perspective that "judging" an employee's performance is gut feel backed by examples and evidence where improvement could have been demonstrated if the employee took the mission of the organization seriously. This book is a great building block on her earlier work Painless Performance Evaluations.

This is a highly practical book packed full of tips, tools and techniques that when followed would make even the most frightening of performance evaluations painless. Narcoleaks una critica injusta al gobierno de Calderon

Este libro es sin duda un gran reportaje Politico acerca de la relacion Mexico-estados Unidos con respecto al Narco, muestra aciertos y errores de amobos gobiernos en su lucha en contra de los carteles y descubre informacion que el publico en general desconoce. Sin embargo en mi opinion, hace demasiado enfoque en una injusta critica al presidente Calderon y lo muestra como inepto o incompetente. Si hizo lo Critica y si dejo de hacer tambien.
Mi personal perspectiva es que CIalderon tuvo el coraje y valor para finalmente enfrentar a los lideres de los carteles y marcarles un alto a los abusos que se cometian infraganti. Recuerdo cuando en tiempos de fox comenzaron los secuestros y los abusos a la sociedad por parte del crimen organizado y nadie movia un dedo.
Que cometio errores.?, sin duda, los unicos que no los cometen son quienes no hacen nada, pero siempre he opinado que es mejor intentar algo y equivocarse, a no hacer nada. Como dijoCristo, " A los tibios los vomito" y si algo mostro Calderon es no ser tibio. A esto hay que sumarle que fue el unico presidente en los ultimos 50 anios que no robo al pais.
En conclusion, creo que es un gran libro, pero su critica continua y a veces infundada a Calderon lo hacen perder valor documental

Very well written but a bit disappointed

I picked up this book with a lot curiosity, hoping that a part of the book would also cover open source tools that help database administrators to perform backups of PostgreSQL databases.
The book covers all the technical aspects of both logical and physical backup (including the use of streaming replication protocol and pg_basebackup).
It is very well written and definitely an interesting read.
My personal opinion though is that most of the book emphasises the usage of custom scripts.
More and more users migrate from other databases and use PostgreSQL in business critical environments with high business continuity requirements - they expect reliable and "standard" solutions that can handle the disaster recovery.
However, an overview of open source tools like OmniPITR (only mentioned), WAL-E and Barman, to name a few, would have been desirable and productive. I am one of the developers of Barman (Backup and Recovery for PostgreSQL), one disaster recovery tool for PostgreSQL database written in Python and distributed under GPL 3.

Great read

I just finished reading "Instant PostgreSQL Backup and Restore How-to". This great little book is packed full of quick and easy to understand tips and tricks. As a SQL Server and Oracle DBA who is dabbling in MySQL and PostgreSQL this book is a perfect addition to my library toolset. The book is a quick read, easy to understand and details everything a DBA needs to know if they are new to PostgreSQL or if they are a seasoned PostgreSQL DBA. I was familiar with many of the commands described in this book, but I also learned some great tips about how compressed backups, point in time recoveries, snapshots, replication and other more intermediate and advanced database topics are implemented in PostgreSQL. Overall, I would gladly recommend this book to any DBA looking to expand their knowledge in PostgreSQL Backups and Restores.

Concise & to the point. It won't waste your time.

I recently was fortunate to receive an ePub copy of "Instant PostgreSQL Backup and Restore How-to" from Packt Publishing for review. The topic obviously high on the list of skills any DBA must master. And given my still relatively recent foray into the realm of Postgres from Oracle, quickly getting up to speed on this is certainly a top priority for me.

From the outset, the book does not disappoint. Like any of you, I'm sure, I have a ridiculous number of tech books in my library. This, however, is my first publication from Packt. And I must say, I definitely enjoyed the short, directly to the point format. I'll likely be taking a look at other Packt titles if for no other reason than that.

Author Shaun Thomas had my immediate gratitude and admiration for providing an extremely quick, concise method for creating a reasonably large database to work through the methods presented. Again, as a relative newcomer to Postgres, with no Postgres instances in use at my organization, I found this invaluable. And without any delay, you will roll right into the basics of backup of your databases. Full, partial, data only, schema info, specific tables... it's all there within the first few pages. In only a few minutes after beginning the book, you have enough information to have a backup of your database underway. Well done.

At the time of this writing, I have not yet made it to the following chapters on more advanced topics. But there is no question I'm looking forward to them given my experience so far.

I'd highly recommend this book. Its concise coverage of the backup and recovery of Postgres will have you up and running in no time. And who has time to waster when it comes to developing proficiency in anything data related these days.
