Somewhat academic review of impact of Wikileaks on old media

I liked this book. It was written from a more academic perspective. As someone who has followed the area since the beginning who is not part of media or academia, it was a bit of a different perspective. I felt like it was a bit defensive and supportive of the traditional journalist community. Seemed very well researched and footnoted than non-academic books on the subject. I suppose it will need to be updated for Snowden.

About the Author
Susan Nees graduated with honors from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She has also received the American Institute of Graphic Arts Award (AIGA). Her artwork can be found at the Low Library of Columbia University and in special collections at Princeton, as well as in other collections. Susan lives with her husband, her two children, Jodo the Dog, and a small flock of chickens in Georgia. MISSY’S SUPER DUPER ROYAL DELUXE is her first children’s book series.

Okay series

I wanted to love this series because of the cute girl appealing covers. I don't hate it, but I don't love it either. The back of the book says "Illustrated early chapter books that grow readers!" but the frankly the book is too hard for early readers. The back of the book also says "Appeals to 1st-2nd Graders" and "Reading Level Grade 2." Along with regular text, there are speech bubbles to follow, diagramed pictures and even a journal page written in handwriting font. The pages are extremely busy between the illustrations, text and speech bubbles. A couple of pages even switch to comic book/graphic novel panel style in the middle of the book. I'm not sure an early reader would know which to read first and that would affect comprehension.

It's not a bad series. I just think this particular book is trying to hard to be Fancy Nancy, without the big vocabulary. And Fancy Nancy has already been done, and done well. This could be a good inbetween book for kids who feel they've outgrown picture books but aren't ready for full fledged chapter books except that I think reading it, following all that is going on, is harder than just reading a regular chapter book. This book is trying to be too many things at once and not doing a good enough job at any of them. It has a ton of busy illustrations to appeal to picture book readers, it has a table of contents with chapters to appeal to those children who ask for a chapter book and it slips into comic/graphic novel format to appeal to that set of readers as well - all in one book! Still, I'm willing to try it out on the library shelves to see what my best critics, the children, think of it! If they love it and read it, I will come back and change this review as they will have proved me wrong (or at least proved that none of the above matters if they love the character) and I'm not afraid to admit when I'm wrong!

A Wonderful Book For Early Readers

Missy is a must read for early readers. The illustrations are colorful and enchanting. I really enjoyed Missy's imagination and spunk. It was a true joy to read.

I bought one for myself and my niece and I can't wait for the other three books to see what other adventures are in store for Missy.

Missy is a breath of fresh air!

The illustrations are spot-on adorable, fun, and full of thoughtful details. I found the story funny, engaging, and genuine!

The day-in-the-life tale is narrated by the main character, Missy. She has been counting down the days until picture day, when she can wear her "super duper royal deluxe" best, only to have her grandiose plans foiled by her mother's more reasonable fashion sense.

As the mother of a young lady a bit like Missy (with a fashion-sense all her own), I got a kick out of her story of triumph and tragedy over not being allowed to wear her outlandish outfit. And I have a feeling Missy will learn a thing or two from her patient new friend Oscar.

I highly recommend this for early readers!

The two friends seize the opportunity to get him to sign a blank card to which they add his protestations of love for Ms. Ribble. Hilarious wedding high jinks ensue (but no marriage). To prevent the villainous woman from retaliating, the protagonists hypnotize her with their 3-D Hypno-Ring. Their plan backfires and a cosmic battle follows, complete with the familiar Flip-O-Rama feature. Among the highlights of this book is an alliterative post-wedding food fight in which, for example, the "creamy candied carrots clobbered the kindergarteners." There is a great deal of laugh-out-loud humor that will appeal to a wide audience. "Captain Underpants" is still one of the best series to get reluctant readers reading.

Hilarious and Imaginative

Captain Underpants threatens to change the way our children read. Exposure to these books will cause them to read faster, more often, with more enthusiasm, and at a higher reading level. They will start to think that reading is really COOL.
Pilkey is a brilliant storyteller. The writing is imaginative and challenging. My 5 year old is now breezing through words such as "torrential", "emphasize", "individuality" and "conformity". He and his seven-year-old brother now prefer creating their own comic books to watching television.
Some uptight parents might not want their children exposed to words like "pee-pee", "poop" and "doo-doo". They might also be squeamish about their kids finding out what a "wedgie" is. Those parents might be well advised to lighten up a bit.

Shocking news! A review by a woman, for her daughter! Gasp, swoon! No you say! Ha ha! At last! The latest from Jerome Horowitz Elementary is out! We were very excited, my DAUGHTER and I to explore one more novella from the crazed depths of Gen Xer Dav Pilkey's mind. Aaaahhh, i was laughing, I was dying! Great references in the comic book, I loved the She-Ra/Superman undertones to the Starch comic. Gosh, this book is great! This is my humor exactly----I know my daughter still only gets half the jokes, (she still giggles like crazy tho) but I love reading them out loud as an adult, it adds to the savoryness of it all....! Dav (I feel like I'm on a first name basis with this guy...) has kept up the "quality" of silliness that has "pervaded" the last 4 Capt. Undies books. George and Harold get Mr. Krupp into trouble with Ms. Ribble...and Ms. Ribble takes it from there...to become-----just wait and read! Trust me, if you like James Marshall, the Dumb Bunnies or anything SILLY with a mix of potty humor, a wry young spirit and a flavor for the northwest, I suggest this series! For GIRLS or boys!

Funny book!

Let's say you hypnotized your teacher into being a Wicked Wedgie Woman. And she started to terrorize the city. And your only hope was a guy wearing underpants and a office curtain around his neck.
But you actually have a chance. Because that guy wearing underpants and an office curtain around his neck is --TRA-LA-LA! --Captain Underpants!
This funny story starts off when the two main characters, George and Harold (probably the most imaginative kids in the entire Captain Underpants world), trick their principal Mr. Krupp into signing a ``will-you-marry-me`` card and delivering it personally to their teacher Ms. Ribble.
Not till the day of the marriage does Mr. Krupp finally tell everyone (including Ms. Ribble) that George and Harold tricked him into giving the card to Ms. Ribble.
The next day, Ms. Ribble told George and Harold that because they made her so mad, she was going to lower their grades from B's and C's to F's and G's (even if there is no such grade as a G).
George and Harold were so mad at Ms. Ribble for doing the grade changing that they took the hypno-ring (from the first book of Captain Underpants ) and hypnotized Ms. Ribble to change their grades - and NOT turn into a Wicked Wedgie Woman, NOT take over the world and NOT try to destroy Captain Underpants .
But then George and Harold find out that the hypno-ring makes women do the opposite of what they=re hypnotized to do!
So now it's up to George , Harold and Captain Underpants to stop the rampaging Wedgie Woman before she takes over the world.
So far there are five Captain Underpants books and another fun activity book and they are all really funny. The one I just told you about is the fifth.
I think the fifth is the best and it deserves a few words. And if I were to put it on a scale of one hundred it would blow the scale up because it's such a great book.
Now you probably are asking , why is it so funny and great ? And I'll answer that right now. The thought of a guy wearing nothing but underpants and a office curtain around his neck saving a city from a Wedgie Woman is hilarious and also it's great when George and Harold find out how to destroy the Wicked Wedgie Woman and when Captain Underpants destroys the evil robots which you=ll find out about and other good reasons if you read the book. The only bad part of the story is that it's too short.
It's good for six-year-olds to eleven-year- olds or twelve-year olds depending on the kind of books you like. Read Captain Underpants and the Wrath of the Wicked Wedgie Woman. It's the greatest book ever!

In the turbulent decades after World War I, both France and Germany sought to return to an idealized, prewar past. Many people believed they could recapture a sense of order and stability by reinstituting traditional gender roles, which the war had thrown off balance. Far from a compliment, this derogatory label encompassed everything society found threatening about women's new place in public life: smoking, working women who preferred independence and sexual freedom to a traditional role in the home. Society felt threatened by the image of the "modern woman," yet also realized that conceptions of femininity needed to accommodate the cultural changes brought about by the Great War.

In Modernizing Tradition, Adam C. Stanley explores how interwar French and German popular culture used commercial images to redefine femininity in a way that granted women some access to modern life without encouraging the assertion of female independence. Examining advertisements, articles, and cartoons, as well as department store publicity materials from the popular press of each nation, Stanley reveals how the media attempted to convince women that--with the help of newly available consumer goods such as washing machines, refrigerators, and vacuum cleaners--being a mother or a housewife could be empowering, even liberating. A life devoted to the home, these images promised, need not be an unmitigated return to old-fashioned tradition but could offer a rewarding lifestyle based on the wonders and benefits of modern technology. Stanley shows that the media carefully limited women's association with modernity to those activities that reinforced women's traditional roles or highlighted their continued dependence on masculine guidance, expertise, and authority.

In this cross-national study, Stanley brings into sharp relief issues of gender and consumerism and reveals that, despite the larger political differences between France and Germany, gender ideals in the two countries remained virtually identical between the world wars. That these concepts of gender stayed static over the course of two decades--years when nearly every other aspect of society and culture seemed to be in constant flux--attests to their extraordinary power as a force in French and German society.

One of the best.

I have read more classics then you think. Let me give you some examples: Dances With Wolves,White Fang, To Kill A Mockingbird, Call of the Wild, and I am also going to call this one a classic too. This was so entertaining that I finished it in 1 day. And I am going to keep on reading these books until I have read every last one of them. FYI, I am 10 yrs old.

Another great western story

Really a good story. Jensen is able to step up and help inspite of the odds, the kind of life we all like to imagine. That's what is great about westerns. Really enjoy the literary work, I am running out of work by Johnstone family. They are trying to bring forth new characters, which is good.

Just Basics

Expensive book for fancy pictures, Some detail on just general information. Sexing, diseases etc. Written about a lot of things but doesn't go into detail about how to fix those issues, makes you aware of what could happen. Paragraphs are short and to the point. Doesn't offer or suggest where to go to find answers on problems they show/tell you about. Well written, but very short, can be read in about 30-45 min if you include spend time looking at the pictures. A to the point book about a lot and a little about everything. I give it 2 stars for that reason, and the price.

I feel like this book gave you a more negative outlook on keeping Quail than positive. I found myself skipping over sections as I became more disturbed by the abundant paragraphs about " what could happen if" looking for actual helpful information about Quail Husbandry. I feel Like it should have been titled the "Negative and Scary aspects of keeping quail" .. but certainly not the most Practical.
