In Race, Theft, and Ethics, Lovalerie King examines African American literature's critique of American law concerning matters of property, paying particular attention to the stereotypical image of the black thief. She draws on two centuries of African American writing that reflects the manner in which human value became intricately connected with property ownership in American culture, even as racialized social and legal custom and practice severely limited access to property. Using critical race theory, King builds a powerful argument that the stereotype of the black thief is an inevitable byproduct of American law, politics, and social customs.

In making her case, King ranges far and wide in black literature, looking closely at over thirty literary works. She uses four of the best-known African American autobiographical narratives -- Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Harriet Jacobs's Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Booker T. Washington's Up From Slavery, and Richard Wright's Black Boy -- to reveal the ways that law and custom worked to shape the black thief stereotype under the institution of slavery and to keep it firmly in place under the Jim Crow system. Examining the work of William Wells Brown, Charles Chesnutt, James Weldon Johnson, and Alice Randall, King treats "the ethics of passing" and considers the definition and value of whiteness and the relationship between whiteness and property.

Close readings of Richard Wright's Native Son and Dorothy West's The Living is Easy, among other works, question whether blacks' unequal access to the economic opportunities held out by the American Dream functions as a kind of expropriation for which there is no possible legal or ethical means of reparation. She concludes by exploring the theme of theft and love in two famed neo--slave or neo--freedom narratives -- Toni Morrison's Beloved and Charles Johnson's Middle Passage.

Race, Theft, and Ethics shows how African American literature deals with the racialized history of unequal economic opportunity in highly complex and nuanced ways, and illustrates that, for many authors, an essential aspect of their work involved contemplating the tensions between a given code of ethics and a moral course of action. A deft combination of history, literature, law and economics, King's groundbreaking work highlights the pervasiveness of the property/race/ethics dynamic in the interfaces of African American lives with American law.

Noted Sherlock Holmes expert Davies (Veiled Detective) launches a new series with this competent, if unspectacular whodunit set in WWII London and featuring Johnny Hawke, who has just started a new career as a PI after a misfiring gun cost him his left eye and a career in the army. His caseload is fairly run-of-the-mill until Eric and Freda Palfrey enlist him to trace their missing 27-year-old daughter, Pamela. Hawke soon finds that the plain, middle-class girl had been living a double life, and that her secret role as a high-class prostitute has led to her death, probably at the hands of one of her clients, one of whom is a prominent film star. With its decent atmospherics, this novel compares favorably to John Gardner's WWII Suzie Mountford series (Troubled Midnight, etc.), but Davies's workmanlike prose doesn't match that of Charles Todd's Ian Rutledge series or Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs mysteries. Sherlock Holmes expert Davies moves from nonfiction to fiction with this series debut set in wartime England. Johnny Hawke, who lost an eye when his rifle misfired in a training accident, nurses feelings of inadequacy as German bombs rain on London. Attempting to eke out a living as a private detective, he falls into a juicy murder case when the parents of a young woman hire him to find their daughter. It's quickly apparent that the young woman was living two very different lives, and when she turns up dead, Hawke continues to dig into her past, despite his clients' objections. Wartime London makes a great setting for crime fiction, and Davies uses it shrewdly, not so much as an excuse to decorate the action with scenes of Blitz-torn London, though there are some of those, but, rather, as a kind of psychological landscape. We feel the war through the characters' dampened emotions and anguished expressions of both guilt and frustration. The mystery itself ends weakly, and a subplot about a homeless boy drifts toward sentimentality, but Johnny Hawke is still a keeper. Bill Ott

Hard Boiled Blitz Detective

With Forests of the Night, the first installment of the Johnny Hawke novels, David Stuart Davies deviates from his realm of Sherlock Holmes and introduces a character that author Val McDermid phrased as a "hero with a heart". Johnny Hawke is a compassionate private investigator who is afflicted with the impairment of having only one eye, a casualty of a gun misfiring during his first week after joining the army to serve his country.

This new series takes place in 1940. The place is London during WWII's famous Blitz where the Germans daily bombard the city with nightly attacks leaving London scrambling for cover when air raids warn of incoming planes that will rain destruction killing many people each and every night.

Discharged from the army as disabled, Johnny Hawke turns hard boiled detective and opens up his own private investigation office. The story opens with a visit from a Mr. and Mrs. Palfrey asking Johnny to help them find their missing daughter Pamela who appears to have dropped out of existence two months ago. The next day following their interview, Pamela is found dead in her bed, stabbed through the heart in cold blooded murder. It's now up to Johnny to uncover the clues to why she was so brutally killed, and why she had turned to prostitution and changed her name to Pammie Palmer.

With many suspects all clamoring to give Johnny the slip, this is a pretty straightforward old fashioned who-dunit in the style of Dashell Hammett or Mickey Spillane. Johnny Hawke however is not the usual cold brutish P.I. There are scenes of Johnny falling in love with the girl, temporarily adopting a small street urchin who worms his way into Johnny's heart and home, and many pages of him showing compassion and kindness even amidst the hardships of war and within the criminal minds we see as the bad guys.

Perhaps just a little sappy and corny due to the lifestyle simplicity of the 40's time period, but for those who love the Noir style murder mysteries, and for readers like me who get tired of the contemporary serial killer violent mysteries being pumped out by the thousands for shock effect, I loved this flash to the past entertaining murder-come-lightly. This is the era of trench coats and fedora hats, rotary telephones, and when scripts for books and movies were right out of Casablanca or Dick Tracy. I can't wait to read the rest of the series now that I've found this one-eyed chivalrous private eye! For something fun and out of the ordinary, give Johnny Hawke a chance!

an abosrbing read but not very atmospheric

A fan of the PBS series, "Foyle's War," I grabbed my copy of David Stuart Davies' "Forest of the Night," the first installment in a new series set in WWII London, featuring private detective Johnny Hawke, with high hopes. Were my expectations met? Yes, and no -- and I'm not being purposefully coy here. The mystery subplot made for a very absorbing and intriguing; however, the history bits -- period detail, atmosphere, etc. were a bit paper thin, and the language seemed a bit heavy and clunky at times. All in all, though, I was happy with "Forests of the Night."

When a jammed rifle causes ex-police constable Johnny Hawke to loose an eye and ends his grandiose plans of performing feats of glory for King and country, Johnny decides to use his detecting skills and become a private detective instead. Things start off slowly at first, that is until a rather dreary middle class couple, Mr. and Mrs. Palfrey hire Johnny to find their missing daughter. Plain and frumpish Pamela, who seemed to spend a lot of time daydreaming about film stars, had left home to move in with a girl friend, but now, Pamela seems to have disappeared. No one at her place of work seems to know where she has vanished to, and the girl that Pamela claimed she would be rooming with seems not to exist at all. Johnny starts his investigation immediately, and one of the first things he discovers is that Pamela was leading quite the double life -- remaining quiet and plain and frumpish for her parents, while blossoming into quite the glamour girl while at work. It is little wonder that Pamela decided to move out and leave no trace for her parents to track her down. Johnny thinks he knows what this case is all about, that is until this missing persons case suddenly becomes a case of murder and the list of suspects includes a well known film star. And even though the police have made a quick arrest, Johnny is quite sure that they have arrested the wrong person, and is determined to use all his detecting skills and ingenuity to nab the real killer...

"Forests of the Night" was a fairly quick and easy read. The plot wasn't too complicated and there were really very few plot twists, even though there were quite a few red herring suspects. Personally, I had anticipated a more complex plot and so was a little discombobulated by the straightforwardness of the novel. What I really missed though was the period details and atmosphere. Perhaps this was because I had "Foyle's War" at the back of my mind. This, of course, was not fair to David Stuart Davies and the book. However, while some of my expectations were unfairly laid on, I have to own that I did find the author's prose style to be heavy and clunky and jarring at times; and this really did not lend itself to very smooth reading. All in all though I would recommend "Forests of the Night" as an engaging 3 1/2 star read.

A compelling read

Author David Stuart Davies is the former editor of Sherlock, a crime fiction magazine and the author of several books on Sherlock Holmes. He edits the Crime Writers' Association magazine, Red Herrings.

If you love period mysteries and anything British, you'll be right at home with the novel, Forests of the Night.

In 1939, young John Hawke, a policeman, is preparing, as is most of Britain, to fight for his country in WWII. His plans change with one shot from a rifle during training. The gun explodes and he loses an eye. Not one to sit behind a desk, John leaves the police force and sets up shop, in London, as a private investigator.

In 1940, John is hired by a young woman's family to find her. Pamela Palfrey been missing for several months. John soon learns that the dowdy, plain girl her parents knew is not the same beautiful, promiscuous woman that others knew.

When Pamela's body is found, John decides that he must find her murderer. His investigation into her life as a 'star-struck' wannabe actress leads John to the fading film actor Gordon Moore. A chance meeting with a young runaway boy also is connected to Gordon Moore. The boy tugs at John's heart because of the parallels to John's own life.

This book is compelling. His dialogue is filled with dry humor and just sparse enough to evoke strong emotions from the reader. The characters are well developed--and you'll either like them or root for their downfall.

I hope that John Hawke will make a return appearance.

"Melvin Sneedly, the villain in this book, was actually based on somebody I knew in sixth grade. The kid I knew, Michael Sneedman (not his real name), wasn't nearly as evil as Melvin, but he sure was annoying. Michael was smarter than anybody else in the class, and he knew it. Worst of all, he took every opportunity he could find to point that out to us all... and rub our noses in it.

Michael had the infuriating habit of finishing all his tests and worksheets before everybody else. Then he'd open his desk, take out a red pen, and GRADE HIS OWN PAPERS! He'd go through all of his answers, make sure they were all correct, then award himself a giant "A+" at the top. He even went so far as to make smiley faces on his papers and write "Another Fantastic Job!", or "Keep up the GREAT work, Michael!"

Oooh, that kid was obnoxious. Here's how I got him back:

After Christmas break, our teacher came up with a dumb idea to help make us all more competitive and aggressive. It was a system of keeping track of our academic achievements and "good deeds". For two weeks, we all brought in those little, flat plastic clips you find on the ends of loaves of bread.

When we finally had enough, our teacher took them all home and spray painted them different colors. The next day, he brought in a large wooden board with all of our names printed on it. Directly under each kid's name was a nail.

The object of this system was that every time you got an "A" or did a "good deed", you'd get a white bread clip (worth 1 point) to hang on the nail under your name. If you got five white bread clips, you could trade them in for a green bread clip (which was worth five points). Then there were yellow, blue, and red bread clips that were worth 10, 20, 50 points respectively. The granddaddy of all bread clips was the golden bread clip, which was worth 100 points.

On an average day, an average kid could maybe expect to earn three or four white bread clips. I usually got one or two. But Michael Sneedman was obsessed. He wasn't happy unless he had earned at least 10 white bread clips every day. Some days he earned as much as 15 bread clips, and I distinctly remember him earning 20 one day. It was the talk of the bus ride home." -- Dav Pilkey

2. Pages 165 and 167 of this book can be flipped to produce a "Flip-O-Rama" effect. It works pretty well, even though it wasn't designed for this effect. I didn't realize this until after I painted the pages. To make it work, flip only page 165. Be sure you can see the images on page 165 AND page 167 when you flip. Pretty neat, huh?

3. In case you're wondering why Sulu seems to get bigger and smaller sometimes (p. 143 and 144), it's because of the highly unstable nature of "Flexo-Growmonic Steel", which is a seldom-used alloy compound with the ability to flex and grow when affected by positive or negative ions and/or currents.

Scientists do agree that if Flexo-Growmonic steel were somehow fused with living mammal tissues at a cellular level, the normal electrical currents of a warm-blooded creature would be enough to trigger a flexing and/or growing reaction. Many scientists feel that the steel might flex and grow exponentially during times of great stress, and therefore it can be concluded that this book is entirely scientifically accurate.

4. The top-secret government experiment that Melvin's parents are working on (see page 72) is actually an old urban legend that was quite popular when I was a kid. The legend warned children that they should never mix Pop-Rocks with Coke because it could make them blow up. Apparently it actually happened to a former child star (he was the kid who played "Mikey" in an old "Life Cereal" TV commercial). According to the legend, "Mikey" mixed Pop-Rocks with Coke, drank it, then exploded.

5. The Pop-Rocks and Coke story is not true. It really won't make you blow up. It will, however, cause you to burst into flames.

6. Super Diaper Baby and Diaper Dog are hidden somewhere in this novel (two places, actually). Can you find them?

WAY grosser than the others...my son just LOVED it :)

My son has been reading this series from the beginning and even though he is beyond this reading level he loves these books just as much as he ever did! I like to let him read things just of the fun of it and he sure thought this book was fun...with a capital *F*...
He wanted to read the book out loud to me so I was able to get the full effects of the *nasty nostril nugget* theme... I hadn't heard him laugh out loud so much, in a long long time. It was very nice to see.
The book is set up like the others in that george and harold write cartoons through out and my son just loves the cartoons. The main characters were all included although some of them were a bit different than in prior books. Some of them also had more or less involvement in this book.
I think this book was very heavy on the whole *nostil nugget/mucus/gross out theme. At times it was a bit much for me but for him...it was total and complete enjoyment. He was roaring with laughter the entire time.
There are so many books that are hard or painful for him to read in school. So many books he is required to read that are either a challenge or quite sad... I think it's important that he read books like this to remember the simple joy of reading... and this book, for him, was joy.

My kids loved it

We had a great time reading Dav's new book. No other kids book author makes my kids laugh so often. I'm sure we'll be hearing from humor-challenged people about the booger and related jokes. I can't wait to chuckle at the "shame on Scholastic" and "this is SO inappropriate" blah blah blah fest. Say what you want--Dav's books are the only books my kids will pass on TV and video games to read. Thanks for all the belly laughs laughs Dav!

Smart satiric humor

First, specifically regarding The Night of the Nasty Nostril Nuggets: Our whole family loves Captain Underpants stories, and we were afraid no more were being written, so it was great to discover the Big, Bad Battle of the Bionic Booger Boy, and realize we'd get to read a part 2 later on. This book tells a typically outrageous story of the boys' good intentions gone awry, when a silly nerdy character named Melvin (hey, not disparaging nerds, been called one often) accidentally turns himself into a pretty icky monster, and the usual twists and turns occur, leading to a cliffhanger that is resolved in Part 2, The Revenge of the Ridiculous Robo-Boogers.
The whole Captain Underpants series is wonderful. I was happy to discover it a couple of years ago, as my son was a very good reader, but completely uninterested in books. This series changed that completely. And I appreciate the gentle pokes at sexist principals, well-meaning but myopic school librarians and slightly suspicious cafeteria ladies; just a few of the personal memories that led me to homeschool my own children. George and Harold get into all kinds of trouble, but they really are kinda warm and sweet, especially as you get to know them throughout the whole series. Anyone who sees these funny, well-thought-out books as negative or subversive is really not getting the message at all.

Excellent

This book is really more about the history of China leading up to the Tiananmen Square massacre and the political realities that defined why the students had no chance to succeed. A very interesting book that added a surprising amount to my understanding of the situation at the time and over the past 25 years, give the other reading I’ve done on the topic.

I was personally in the Square with my wife and a small group tourists the afternoon before the massacre. We were confined to our hotel a few miles away from the square for a couple days afterwards listening to BBC broadcasts about the goings on, and got out of Beijing on the train.

Highly recommended.

If you've read Dav Pilkey's first two comic epics, The Adventures of Captain Underpants and Captain Underpants and the Attack of the Talking Toilets, you already know the brave Captain is really just crabby old Principal Krupp, hypnotized into becoming the world's greatest superhero every time someone snaps their fingers. Funny but ALMOST BANNED!

This comic is totally hillarious, but make sure to buy it before big brother says you can't! Check out the following:
'Captain Underpants' lives to see another day ORFORDVILLE, Wis. - Dav Pilkey's book, Captain Underpants and the Invasion of the Incredibly Naughty Cafeteria Ladies From Outer Space (and the Subsequent Assault of Equally Evil Lunchroom Zombie Nerds), came under scrutiny after a student's parents asked that it be reviewed. The story's main characters ridicule and disobey their school principal, bury some dead lunch ladies by the school and write comic books riddled with misspellings, among other things. The Parkview School District committee voted 5-0 to keep the book in the school's library. The district's curriculum director said children probably would be best served if someone read or discussed the book with them to point out misspellings and intolerance issues.

Excellent!!!! Absolutely fabulous work!!!

The first time my son, Edward, brought home the first novel, I thought "oh no, another book I will have to hide" because I thought the content would be inappropriate. But he was laughing so hard that I got curious. So I started reading it then I was laughing hard! In fact, so hard that I woke up everyone else in the house because I was sneaking and reading it at night! When I saw what this book did for my son's interest in reading, I couldn't wait for the sequel. In fact, I bought this and the third novel last night after a parent-teacher's conference. So Edward has allowed me to read this one while he reads the other. This book is just as hilarious as the first. This is definitely the way to get kids reading.
I say hooray for Dav Pilkey and thank him for being a boost to my son's interest in reading! Reading is only fun when you enjoy the content and I definitely enjoy having Dav's books for my son and myself.

MY SON JUST LOVES ALL THE CPTN. UNDERPANTS BOOKS...

I think that there should be more funny books for children. Children like to laugh just as much, if not more, than adults. And laugh he does! The other thing I like about these books is that he enjoys them so much that he was able to make a transition into "chapter" books painlessly...Which prior to that he found intimidating A+ for captain underpants!
