Many Errors

I'm about half way through, and I've found 8 errors in the book so far. These aren't simple typos, but syntax problems in the examples that keep the example configurations from even running. There's just no excuse for getting syntax wrong in a technical book.
For example, at location 410 in the Kindle version, you are told to use the variable ${status}, but above it in the same example, you defined the variable as $status. ${status} is not a legal variable name in the Puppet DSL, and when you run the code, it fails. It's clear the author never tried the examples in the book.

Waste of time, brains, and money.

This thing..... it's not a book... it's a slightly heavy pamphlet. It's been padded so hard typographically, that even at 37 pages, it's at best, a stretch. It would've been more readable formatted for 20.
There's nothing here that you can't find online in the excellent documentation set that the puppetlabs folks publish. Basically, what you're getting here is a poorly edited, poorly developed first draft, of what might be an excellent -single- chapter in the classic Nemeth (Snyder-Hein-Whaley) book.
I bought it thinking: "Hmm, maybe some keen little hiera tricks or something, maybe this will help me grok some of the class-hierarchy issues I'm having with my puppet project, I don't need much, let's see what's up." I'm sorely, sorely disappointed.
I'm ashamed, even: This is maybe the second or third tech book in my entire life that I've returned.
I feel really bad for Jo Rhett. I went and peeked at his twitter feed, and he seems like a genuinely nice guy. I don't think ill of him at all. I'm going to work under the assumption that he's a good guy, with good intentions, and was rooked and robbed by the folks at Packt, who appear to be a vanity press instead of a meaningful publisher. Jo might've had the moxie to write a -definitive- good puppet book, but not under these conditions.

Quick read, but quite a few errors

This book is very fast paced (which is a good thing) and takes you by the hand to set up your first Puppet Master.
However, it does not go any further than an example for each step and fails to refer to more elaborate documentation on the subjects touched. For instance, the exec resource is mentioned briefly without mentioning proper ways to make it run indempotently with onlyif and unless. Also, the examples in this book do not comply with the style guide. This would be something I would expect from any book about Puppet.
Another point of criticism is that there is no mention of foreman, nor of the puppet modules that help you set up a Puppet Master automatically. Also, there are quite a few errors in the code examples.
Despite its shortcomings, this book will provide you with a quick tour of what Puppet can do for you. It can be read in only a few hours, which is a big advantage as time is our most limited resource.
