A picture is worth a thousand words

There are alot of pictures in this small book. Near half taken by the winning Germans during the early beginning and then slowly transitioning to the Soviet take on things as they pushed on to Berlin.

Most pictures (if not all) are of fine quality and cover a large field of what's happening across the front.

In between your postcard look of military might and the wages of war the author has written many a fine chapter on the Eastern Front. How Stalin remand blissfully ignorant for as long as he could of the evil intention of Hitler. Then how the Soviet ability to turn a total landslide defeat into denial. Then using that denial to rebuild and reforge a impoverished nation into a military bulldozer. Information and subtitles are included for every picture and there are a good many maps as well.

This book is really a good buy for just the images alone. Then they throw in the historical war data and descriptions of the actual forces involved with dates. Worth the money. I hope you enjoy.

Photo-Guide to Russian Front Armor!

Anthony Tucker-Jones' ARMORED WARFARE ON THE EASTERN FRONT is a photo-history of tank combat on the Eastern Front from 1941 to 1945. Part of the IMAGES OF WAR series, it offers up 134 pages of rare b&w photographs with bare-bones accompanying text.

After two preparatory chapters detailing and comparing Russian and Axis armored forces pre-June 1941, Tucker-Jones takes the reader through Eastern Front combat chronologically with chapters on 'Barbarossa - The Red Army Smashed,' 'Zhukov's Moscow Miracle,' 'Timoshenko's Kharkov Riposte' and so on. Each chapter has a short, two-three historical summary followed by pages of photographs, many of them from the Stavka Photo Library and the Scott Pick Collection.

Given past IMAGES OF WAR volumes,I was pleasantly surprised by the pix in this 2011 Pen & Sword volume. Photo quality was much better than other IOW books I've seen and captioning seems a bit more detailed. The images themselves are a treat for 'heavy metal' buffs - T-26s, T-34s, T-35s, BA-10s, Panzer II/II/IVs, Hungarian Toldis and Turans, StuG IIIs, KV-2s, SU-76s, IS-1/2/3s, various artillery pieces, etc. A real smorgasbord!

If the Russian Front is an interest or if you're into tanks and AFVs, ARMORED WARFARE ON THE EASTERN FRONT will be of interest. It's one of the better IMAGES OF WAR volumes to come along. Recommended.

About the Soviet tanks

The book is mainly a brief description about the Soviet armour. Shows some interesting pictures about the red army tanks and try to cover the german tanks also, but from my point of view it fails completely since it is a poor description of the garman armoured warfare. On the other hand if the interest was on the soviets it does not cover them completely..

My son enjoyed reading this book before bed. He got into the characters. We took turns reading, which my son could usually care less to do this with other books. My son is autistic and the pictures were so exciting for him and assisted in keeping his attention on the book.

Specious connections make for worrisome history

Mr. Snay provides a useful description of the Fenians, a group of Irish immigrants seeking to reclaim their homeland from the British via militar means. Many Fenians joined the Union Army during the Civil War with the avowed purpose of learning how to fight the British when the time came. I had read much about the acrimony between the Irish and African Americans before and after the war, and I thought this book would shed some light on the conspiracy between Irish immigrants and Southern whites. This book did not do that, so do not look for it. Mr. Snay sought to develop parallels among three groups: the Fenians, the Union League (a political arm of the Republican Party aimed at increasing black votes in the South after the war), unfortunately, the Ku Klux Klan as a paramilitary arm of Southern whites. I was disappointed that he chose to use the KKK as an arm of southern whites since not all whites were happy with the Klan and did not appreciate their approach. The Union League did engage in parades and ceremonies using swords and guns as icons, but the members of the League rarely engaged in armed conflict with any other group. While the vignettes were interesting, none of them tied the groups through collaboration or conflict with each other. I would read this book with a box rather than a grain of salt as Mr. Snay seems to have worked a little too hard at trying to make connections where they were tenuous at best.

About the Author
David Stuart Davies is the author of five novels featuring private detective hero, Johnny Hawke, and another five novels featuring Sherlock Holmes as well as several non-fiction books about the Baker Street detective including the movie volume Starring Sherlock Holmes. As well as being a committee member of the Crime Writers' Association, and editing their monthly magazine, Red Herrings, David is the general contributing editor for Wordsworth Editions Mystery & Supernatural series and a major contributor of introductions to the Collectors' Library classic editions.

Enjoyable British Crime!

"A Taste for Blood" is set in 1940s London, during World War Two, and features two characters that fans of the author will have met before - Detective Inspector David Llewellyn of the Metropolitan Police and Private Detective, Johnny Hawke. As this is the first time I had encountered any novels by David Stuart Davies, I had no knowledge of these two characters. However, this did not affect my enjoyment of this crime novel.

There are two storylines to the book, one in which we meet a particularly horrible villain who had previously been caught by D.I.Llewllyn and incarcerated for eight years before his escape. He is a ghoulish character, who is determined to imprint himself on the world in a very unpleasant manner. The other storyline concerns Johnny Hawke's investigation of a suspicious suicide. Both cases touch each other at intervals throughout the book, as David Llewellyn and Johnny Hawke are friends - this friendship plays an important part in the last part of book.

I enjoyed "A Taste for Blood". It was rather gruesome in parts, but the violence was not gratuitous. I particularly liked the way in which the author used words and phrases which resonated with me. They reminded me of films and novels written in the 40s and 50s, giving the novel an authentic period feel. I had no idea how these intertwined plots would resolve themselves and was kept guessing until the end.
I shall certainly search out some more of David Stuart Davies, starting, I think, with the first book featuring Johnny Hawke.

Simplistic

Really a junior adult adventure book but though somewhat shallow in content, nevertheless an entertaining read, as indeed are all of his other Johnny Hawke novels.
