A fascinating read; a delicious local murder mystery!

Being a keen enthusiast for local history, I was fascinated by this book. While researching genealogy in local libraries and archives over the years, I had come across a mention or two of this terrible murder. The story rivals anything you'd see on television today, and certainly has all the elements of a great murder mystery.
I commend Dr. Komar for her excellent research and her ability to tell a riveting story. I loved reading all about the "locals", fascinating God-fearing men well-known is this area, such as Henry Steeves and Joseph Crandall, and other familiar names such as Keillor, Botsford, and Chipman. This story also gives us a much better understanding of early New Brunswick life at a time when a lot of our ancestors had yet to cross the Atlantic from England and Ireland.
Thank you, Dr. Komar, for an unforgettable story - it was so interesting that I didn't mind being away from my Kindle for a couple of days.

Justice and History revealed

Great example of how we seek justice and how we can get things muddled up! Debra Komar provides us with a compelling story that leaves us pondering the issue of who is really responsible for a criminal act, in this case murder...... Do we need to seek others who are equally guilty? Love this non-fiction account of Jacob Peck. It can't be just left as an interesting historical event because today we face the challenge of media coverage ......are we really so much more sophisticated today that we will not fall into the error of omission or the error of bias in reporting or indeed the error in using secondary sources for our news stories.

Tragic yet intriguing

The Ballad of Jacob Beck by Debra Komar is an intriguing story of a man (Amos Babcock) who brutally murdered his sister (Mercy Hall) claiming he was instructed to do so by God. The story is set in 1805 and chronicles the trial and execution of Amos Babcock.
This tragic story demonstrates how isolation coupled with religious mania is able to change poverty stricken yet good hard-working people into violent people.
The Ballad of Jacob Peck is wonderfully written with historically correct information. It is a very fascinating and informative read. Debra Komar did a wonderful job with this book. This is a must read and I highly recommend it.
