The comradeship of the close-knit crew is expressed in shots showing how the men’s domestic chores were performed in the confined space of these small craft miles from the nearest land. It is most unusual to have such a comprehensive photographic record of a U-boat on active service since so few survived the war intact.

A Picture Story of U-108 at War

This was sort of a rambling story of U-108's several patrols sprinkled with photos of the officers and crew, views of U-108 topside and below, as well as docks and ports of call. There were several photos of ships sinking after being torpedoed or fired upon by the German U-boat. Being a 20-year submariner myself, the photos of the crew's activities and their surroundings were of the greatest interest. The conditions under which they were operating in the Atlantic were unbelievably difficult and in the end were short-lived.

Pictures are great!

Well done book. Could have used some better prof readers. The last chapter contained pictures of U-108 leaving on it's first cruise. All of the crew showed evidence of beards, The crew would have been clean shaven if they were outgoing. Pennants were shown flying atop the periscope. This again meant they were returning not leaving. But it's a book well worth viewing.

The pictures in this book and their descriptions make it worth the purchase, however, there is not really much else to this book.
