“There is no substitute for victory.” – Douglas MacArthur

Everyone has read about history’s most important people and events in dense textbooks and classrooms, but words can only say so much. In Charles River Editors’ Interactive Biography series, history comes to life in video and audio, allowing people to not only read history but truly experience it, through the eyes and ears of the people who were there.

Of all the military men America produced during the 19th and 20th centuries, it’s hard to find one as important, successful and controversial as General Douglas MacArthur. The son of a Civil War veteran, MacArthur rose to become the most instrumental commander in the Pacific Theater during World War II. His legendary return to the Philippines in 1944 made good on one of the war’s most famous vows, and it was MacArthur who fittingly who oversaw the occupation and reconstruction of Japan following the war.

Given his long and celebrated career, MacArthur was the obvious choice to lead the newly created United Nations’ troops during the Korean War, but his arguments over war strategy and policy eventually led to his controversial firing by President Harry Truman in 1951. After that, in his own words, he “faded away”, living out his remaining days on the top floor of the Waldorf Hotel until his death in 1964. For many with a conservative disposition he remains a hero who, had he been listened to, would have prevented the current impasse with the rogue state that is modern North Korea. For some liberal thinkers he was dangerously obsessive while wholly ignorant of geopolitics, and he has been branded as a general who would have used atomic weapons and potentially triggered the third world war.

The truth is far more difficult to discern and much more subtle. Douglas MacArthur was one of the most intelligent soldiers America has produced, and he was also one of the most prominent statesmen of the twentieth century. He made his mark from flamboyant staff officer in the Vera Cruz expedition of 1914 to United Nations Commander in the Korean War. Along the way he found fame in World War I, participated in the controversial Bonus Army incident, lost and won campaigns in World War II, and served as Army Chief of Staff, Superintendent at West Point and as effective ruler of Japan. Rarely out of the limelight, MacArthur was as much an administrator as he was a soldier and a combat commander, and in all of his endeavors he found success and controversy.

This interactive biography of General Douglas MacArthur profiles the amazing life and career of the American war hero, while also examining his personality and analyzing his lasting legacy. It also includes several videos of MacArthur before and during World War II, a clip of his celebrated speech to Congress, and pictures of important people, places, and events in his life. You will learn about General MacArthur like never before.

Comments to the Book and Interactive content
By Phil (not) in Mågnoliá
Douglas MacArthur was one of the most accomplished and highly decorated American military officers of the 20th century. He is famous for his accomplishments both overseas and domestically over a span of more than 40 years, including World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. He is perhaps best known for his leadership of the American Army in the Far East, most notably the Philippines. During World War II, he was famously forced to evacuate the Philippines when Japanese soldiers invaded in 1941/42, and his remarks - "I shall return" - were made true when he returned in 1945 to retake the islands from the Japanese. He was the senior American military officer on the warship USS Missouri when the Japanese formally surrendered on September 2, 1945. In addition to his military accomplishments, he also served as President of the American Olympic Committee during the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, and held other civilian positions of leadership in between and after his military service, including Chairman of Remington Rand corporation.

MacArthur is therefore a figure of 20th century American military history who is of equal importance to Eisenhower and Patton, and an introductory biography describing his life is something worth reading. This particular book however fails to merit any strong recommendation.

This biography of General Douglas MacArthur is one of many products that have been released by "Charles River Editors", a publisher for Kindle who described themselves in their preface to earlier books offered on Amazon (but not in this particular one) as "founded by Harvard and MIT alumni to provide superior editing and original writing services..."

They have been promoting their books here on Amazon, and have offered quite a few of the books at no charge, presumably to give their publications greater exposure. After I obtained one of their earlier books I was added to their mailing list, and a few days ago they e-mailed me promoting this and other books that they are currently offering at zero dollars. I took the bait and downloaded several of their books onto my Kindle, and here are my impressions from this particular one - "Interactive Biography of Douglas MacArthur".

I should also mention that the invitation I received from them to download this book for free was also clearly for the purpose of soliciting reviews such as this one. I say this because their e-mail also included the statement "If you really like one of the titles, please leave a review on Amazon.com to let us know what we're doing well. If you think we should fix something in a title or future titles, please email us your concerns and we will be happy to address them".

From the wording of their note, they apparently want only complimentary reviews and would prefer to receive criticism by e-mail!

Now, to the book itself. To begin with, it is reasonably well produced, with text supplemented by photos and audio/video, a functioning table of contents and a bibliography. It is considerably better than some of the low cost books offered for Kindle that are simply presenting a no-frills document taken from public domain materials and basically pasted into Kindle format with no added value provided.

This book skims through MacArthur's life quite quickly. It is not an in-depth biography of his life, which was a very interesting and important one in American history. It is superficial at best, and if there were page numbers to show the length of the book, my guess is that it would be 50-60 pages or so. It is interesting to note that if you read through this book side-by-side with the Wikipedia article on Douglas MacArthur, you will see that the content is very similar. In fact one of the color photos early in the book is the identical photo as the one on the Wikipedia page. However the detail of the book is considerably less than Wikipedia, and the book is structured somewhat differently (I think that the Wikipedia article is better organized than the book). As near as I can tell, essentially everything covered by the book is also included in the Wikipedia article, plus considerably more.

Some notes to the interactive content, since this is a highlighted feature of the book. These audio and video features are not viewable on the Kindle PaperWhite, but they are supposed to work on the latest versions of the Kindle Fire. They are also viewable on the iPad, which is what I used to make this evaluation of them. The following 6 videos comprise the total of the interactive content of the book:

- MacArthur's Early Years: 1 1/2 minutes, audio over grainy b&w photos and short video clips. It sounds like an excerpt from some 1940's or 1950's documentary footage
- MacArthur in World War I: 2 1/2 minutes, continuation of the same audio, now covering the WWI period, with grainy b&w movie excerpts, most of which look like generic WWI documentary footage
- I Shall Return: 30 seconds, unable to view (see notes below on download difficulties)
- Los Negros: 1 1/2 minutes, this video segment is clearly identified as "Universal Newsreel - MacArthur in Battle, narrated by Ed Herlihy". It is a continuation of the same style of footage and narration as the earlier clips, interesting documentary footage as was shown during WWII in movie theaters in the U.S.
- MacArthur Returns to the Philippines - 2 minutes, similar as previous
- MacArthur Addressing Congress - 1/2 minute excerpt of his address to Congress, chopped off at the end

In other words, the "interactive" audio/video content in total is 8 1/2 minutes. The b&w aspect can be accepted since the materials are contemporary to MacArthur's lifetime. Much of the material is generic wartime footage and is not specific to MacArthur himself.

Of all of the video clips, I was most interested in the final video, which shows his congressional address, but the 30 second clip is really too short to be significant in any way. It is really of interest only to give a sense of MacArthur's presence and personality at that point in his life. I do not know why they did not include that address in its entirety. They do include the full text of the address as the last chapter of the book.

Since it was necessary to put the book onto my iPad in order to view the videos, I want to comment to that experience because I had great difficulty downloading this book to my iPad and getting the videos to run correctly:
- the first download attempt was not successful and I received "download error" and had to re-try
- the second appeared to be successful however once I opened the book and went to play the videos, one of them would not play and I received an error message instructing me to remove the document and re-download it
- the third download attempt was not successful and I received "download error" and had to re-try
- the fourth download attempt repeated the experience of attempt #2, with the same video not functioning
- the fifth download attempt was not successful and I received "download error" and had to re-try
- the sixth download attempt repeated the experience of attempt #2, with the same video not functioning

At that point I stopped trying to re-download the book to the iPad and just accepted that it was not ever going to download with all videos working properly.

Since I viewed the book both on my PaperWhite and on my iPad, I will also mention that the book is much nicer to read on the iPad than on the PaperWhite, not only because the video clips are functional, but also because the photos and layout are much more attractive. That is probably similar to what you would experience on the Kindle Fire.

My conclusions are that that this is a mediocre to (at best) fair quality book, written at probably grade school / high school level, for someone who has a curiosity about the subject. It is not going to be anywhere near satisfactory for anyone wanting a serious book about MacArthur. For that you should consider something like William Manchester's American Caesar: Douglas MacArthur 1880 - 1964, which I believe is considered to be one of the finest biographies of the General for the general reader.

As a final comment, I am always skeptical when reading something that has no attributions. This book, along with most of the "Charles River Editors" publications that are produced by "Harvard and MIT alumni", does not identify the author or what the author's qualifications are to be writing a biography of Douglas MacArthur. If the author was someone with the background to be qualified in writing and publishing something like this, then I think they would want to be identified. If I am reading a nonfiction book, particularly of history or biography, I want to know the qualifications of the person who has written it. Frankly I think that this is something put together on a pretty low budget, using public domain sources and probably some kind of job-shop writing staff to take materials such as Wikipedia and quickly put a book together so that it can be offered for sale. If you can get this for free, like I did, or for 99 cents like many of the books available for the Kindle, then it may be worth it just to give you an idea of what MacArthur's life was all about. Just know that you can get the same thing or better from simply going to the Wikipedia article on MacArthur, or from spending a couple of minutes doing some basic searches on the web and browsing some of the historical websites that proliferate. I would certainly not recommend this book at its normal price of $3 or $4.

If you want a serious Kindle book on MacArthur, my recommendation is that you don't mess around with something like this, and instead spend the very reasonable price of $9 and get Manchester's book for the Kindle. That is the real deal.

I've given this 3 stars (rather than fewer) only because it is inexpensive enough that the damage it will do to your budget is pretty limited if you decide to purchase it despite my criticisms. It would not be fair to expect much for such a low price. You get what you pay for, after all. I also believe that the content of the book is accurate, such that it is.

Good, but not Great, Biography of the man Churchill Dubbed the Greatest Hero
By Bill Anderson
Length: 88 pages.

I have mixed emotions regarding this interactive biography.

On the one hand, it does an excellent job highlighting he great military leader's splendid accomplishments, not the least of which was his becoming the first son of a Congressional Medal of Honor winner to also be so awarded. MacArthur was unquestionably a brave warrior and great strategist.

I also appreciated the candid appraisal of the man's blunders during WW II and, especially, at Korea.

My misgivings are two-fold:

There are more typos and editing snafus in this book than I have seen in almost any other CRE book. A stray 4 and a stray 6 early in the book, and some typos here and there, plus a word missing in the last paragraph of chapter 10: the word "years" is missing after 36, making it read 36 after instead of 36 years after...

The sloppy editing, though, is not the only concern. The video clips don't seem to properly amplify the points, for me, and, hence, just don't add the value that I expected. Also, the clip of his address to congress seems shorter than intended, but, perhaps I am spoiled by so many other great CRE interactive presentations.

I do feel that an opportunity to present the heart and soul of this great leader was missed. On the other hand, I am grateful to CREfor being able to see how the ever growing ego of this leader whose errors came mostly after his prominence seemed to lead him to believe he was invincible.

I also want to mention, there are several nice photographs plus on fantastic color picture of MacArthur surrounded by fellow troops on a beachfront.

I liked this book, but didn't love it. Not certain why, though, aside from the above mentioned points.
