Missy has BIG plans for the class pet . . .well, for three of them! She plans to have a fashion show, create a circus, and even put the pets in their very own parade. But a mean new girl in class, Tiffany, says she's taking the pets home with her instead. Missy enlists the help of her trusty friend, Oscar, to come up with a stellar plan. Just like with everything else, Missy takes the class pets home the only way she knows how--the super duper royal deluxe way! This is the second book in this humorous, full-color early chapter book series.

Gr 1-3–Of these books, Boris and Class Pets competently fill the gap between easy readers and early chapter books, while Meltdown Madness and Coco are a bit more challenging. Boris really wants a komodo dragon. He writes to the zoo to see if their komodo dragons ever take vacations. Turns out, they don't, and Boris's plans are ruined. He puts his skink in the komodo cage and tries to pass it off as a baby dragon. After it escapes, Boris reopens his letter from the zoo, finds tickets for free admission, and his whole family has an outing. Missy wants to take home the class pets for the weekend but her plans are derailed when a new girl is determined to have what she wants. In the end, Missy bests the bully. Boris's and Missy's stories are told through traditional text, many speech bubbles, and comic-book panels. Both books incorporate full-color artwork throughout. Meltodown Madness looks the most like a traditional early chapter book, with many black-and-white sketches accompanying the text. The young narrator has a magic coin that translates his words into reality (sayings like “money doesn't grow on trees” spawn a dollar bill under the tree). The boy's powers often cause more trouble than good, but in the end he is able to reason his way into a solution. Coco is in the form of a diary and includes black-and-white lists and doodles. The little girl uses her love of baking cupcakes to help save snails from becoming extinct. Words like “extinct” and “fund-raiser” are defined in doodled bubbles. All four books should be popular.–Amy Commers, South St. Paul Public Library, MNα(c) Copyright 2013. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Name Calling and Bratty Behavior
By Ami. S.
Grades K-2

I did not love the first book in this series, Missy's Super Duper Royal Deluxe Picture Day and I have to say that I like this second book even less and find it offensive. The antagonist in this book is Tiffany, the new girl, "Tiffany was big. Tiffany was loud. Tiffany had hairy arms." Okay, really? As a curly headed woman of Italian heritage, I have hairy arms that I was extremely self-conscious about as a girl growing up. To the book's credit, it does not illustrate Tiffany as any of these things. She is the same size as the other characters and it does not show her arms as hairy. However she does have curly hair. Missy is a brat who wants her way and she is hard to like. She wants the rats, Eenie-Meenie, Miney and Moe and she does not care that the teacher has already told Tiffany she could have them. Instead she sulks and plots to try and get them for herself. One has to wonder why she can't just take them home the next weekend instead? And Missy doesn't use her brain to show her mother reasons why she should have the pets (she never says rats until the end of the book) instead she just begs, pleads and nags until she wears her down and her mother relents. Missy resorts to name calling in school, calling Tiffany a "Big Old Noodlehead" (I guess because of her curly hair) and then she complains that Tiffany is a tattletale when she gets in trouble for name calling. She also passes a note to her friend Oscar with a drawing of of Tiffany and arrow pointing to her hair that says, "Tiffany is a noodle head." As a fellow curly haired gal, my sympathies lie with Tiffany, not Missy the brat. Missy also doesn't treat her friend, Oscar very nice. What Missy could use in this series is a lesson in manners and she should learn not to make fun of people for parts of their body. Skip this book unless you want to encourage Missy's bratty behavior and name calling among your readers.

Delightful from start to finish!
By Kate
The new Missy books are a delight for young readers! Missy may be a handful, but she's irresistible. Children will identify with her struggles and triumphs, and appreciate the steady friendship of level-headed Oscar. Told from the perspective of a child, the book has an engaging story line accompanied by playful illustrations. As a teacher, one of my favorite things about the book is the clever way everyday words are worked into the text, which is just the thing to encourage new readers and build confidence.

Book Two of the Missy Series is a Winner!
By Laurel Rudolph
I just finished book two of the Missy's Super Duper Royal Deluxe Series "Class Pets". It is equally as charming as the first book and I wanted to keep reading to find out how it turned out.

I love level-headed Oscar and that he unknowingly helps Missy out. A good match for both of them.

Ms. Nees has brought all the characters to life with her wonderful illustrations and has definitely given Missy a take charge personality.

Missy is going to go far in this life.
