About the Author
Catherine O'Flynn is the author of the bestselling debut novel, What Was Lost, which won the Costa First Novel Award in 2007, was short-listed for The Guardian First Book Award, and was long-listed for the Booker Prize and the Orange Prize. Her second novel, The News Where You Are was an Indie Next List selection and was shortlisted for the 2011 Edgar Award for Best Paperback Original. She lives in Birmingham, England.

A somewhat confusing review for a very moving book.

I loved this book. I am not sure I can explain why. The people seemed so real to me every one of them. I have read two other works by this author and I find I can't put them down because while I am reading them I find my foibles forgiven in the realization that I am not so different from someone across the sea. Despite the sense that I know the people the plot is suspenseful and I didn't know at all how Eamonn would settle himself if at all.
And of course Mr. Lynch is the hero and that is the best part.

Enjoyable Enough, But Bit Hurried In The End

When Dermot decides to holiday at his son, Eamonn’s, neither he, or Eamonn can foretell the changes about to take place in their lives. Living in a state of depression, Eamonn is pining away for his love, who left to think things over, and Dermot, still adjusting to the death of his wife, is searching for a deeper connection to his son. The deserted, neglected community cause both to take a long look at the past as they grow into an awareness of themselves and each other.
I loved the idea of this book. The interpersonal look into a man and his grown son, awkward at interacting, yet both in need of each other. Using flashbacks from both perspectives, we see how the men have reached the point in their lives and how they learned to cope. The community’s neighbors throw in a bit of color to the narrative, although I didn’t quite feel how they added to the overall storyline.
I felt the nostalgia and longing within the pages, but wrestled with the back and forth of the time line, along with less than necessary additions. Some of the plot seemed superfluous, as it had nothing at all to do with the relationship of the two men. I finished the book with more questions than answers, but Dermot’s personality shined through as the saving grace of this story. I’d say, overall, it was enjoyable enough, but a little too hurried in the end.

Mr. Lynch's Holiday made my own burdens much lighter...

This is my first reading of Ms. O'Flynn's work, and I found it an incredible blend of insight, and humor. It deals with several subjects that continue to confound us as we age. Feelings of being disconnected with our lives, feelings of having made terrible choices that we can't rise above, feelings of having lost our closest family members over time, inability to cope with actual loss. The author brings such a refreshing, reassuring viewpoint to the ageless mystery of fathers and sons, she held me spellbound. I often read passages aloud to my wife as some were the most clearly stated explanations for things we often prefer to ignore I have yet read.
She also has a very well-formed idea of some of the pitfalls of retirement getaways and expat villages in sunny climes. Having my own experience with an attempted relocation to a sunnier locale with "unfettered opportunity", I found her words answering questions I still hadn't confronted about my own ideas and mistakes. It's very hard not to heap so much blame upon yourself for having made really major mistakes, that you can have real trouble digging out the other side. Fortunately, if you settle down with this quick, absorbing read, you'll find the burden gets much lighter along the way. Thank you, Catherine O'Flynn for this wonderful book.
