In the stunning follow up to Father Night, Jack McClure faces a choice: help the woman he loves, or destroy her as the enemy she is.

Shortly after McClure leaves a late night meeting with Dennis Paull, the Secretary of Homeland Security, Paull is found-shot dead. The President is furious but equally frightened of a scandal, since Jack McClure is one of their own-an operative and Paull's friend. Who will protect the country if even McClure cannot be trusted?

With top officials in the CIA and FBI after him, McClure, still devastated over his friend's death, goes on the run. Someone framed him for Paull's murder, possibly to prevent him from accomplishing Paull's last request-a task vital to U.S. National Security. Someone in the intelligence community has gone rogue and is reporting to The Syrian, one of the most cruel, aggressive terrorists McClure and Paull have ever come across. McClure has been charged with securing the name of the mole, but when Paull's informant goes missing, McClure realizes his mission has only begun.

Jack may be setting off after a mole, but he knows that ultimately he will have to confront The Syrian. Which also means confronting The Syrian's lover, Annika Dementieva, the woman Jack once loved and lost.

On a quest to find the mole before cloaked agents around the world are exposed and murdered, Jack will soon find himself facing his own beloved enemy...

From Booklist
Lustbader’s latest in the Jack McClure series opens with a bang when McClure receives a call from his boss, Dennis Paull, secretary of Homeland Security. Paull believes there is a mole in the organization working for the criminal mastermind known as the Syrian. He wants McClure to uncover the traitor. McClure has a personal stake since the woman he loves betrayed him to be with the Syrian. When Paull is murdered shortly after their meeting, McClure becomes the number-one suspect. Now he has to find the mole to prove his innocence. But when he confronts Annika, his former love, will he be able to hide his true feelings? For a novel with such a great setup, nothing much happens beyond an occasional steamy sex scene or someone being shot in the head. Still, Lustbader fans will enjoy the ride, if they don’t think about it too much. --Jeff Ayers

Another sizzling spy thriller starring Mr. Jack McClure
By Bookreporter
"The secretary of homeland security is shot in the middle of the nation's capital."
"In his own home, no less..."
"No one could have known, let alone guessed, that he and his security detail would be shot to death by his own man, Jack McClure."

Secretary Dennis Paull had information that got him killed. Jack McClure was there at the time. He had an after-hours meeting with Paull, who gave him a problem to solve: Uncover the identity of a mole high up in their midst. But when McClure heads home, he doesn't realize someone has breached security and killed his friend.

The U.S. government knows it has a mole. They have known for quite some time, but it's the who that has been eluding them. Now, with the murder of Dennis Paull, the evidence points squarely at Jack McClure as both the mole and the killer. The Feds waste no time closing in for an arrest. Fortunately, for McClure, someone tips him off and he makes a run for it. By the barest of margins, he manages to get himself out of the country just in the nick of time. Of course, DC officials have long reaches, and men are soon hot on his trail and tracking his every move.

It becomes the proverbial race against time. McClure knows who he needs to find --- Secretary Paull gave him that name, along with the assignment --- but he also knows he needs to find that person before someone kills him to silence him forever. Therein lies the tricky part. You see, Paull's informant has cockily dropped hints that he can unmask the mole. But he's intimately tied to Iraj Namazi, aka The Syrian, a terrorist of the worst kind: brilliant, cunning and power hungry. Staying alive around Namazi can be challenging at best.

Complicating the mission is McClure's ex-lover, Annika Dementieva. The last time he saw her --- the woman he craves despite himself --- she betrayed him for Namazi. Now McClure is out to locate her and destroy her lover. When he does, will he also destroy her? And can he trust himself to keep his head when he sees her? After all, she is the one person in the world who can turn his brain to mush.

With relentless action, McClure is on a high-stakes chase through the U.S., Bangkok and Switzerland. And with the Alps as a backdrop, it can't get much more precipitous. Or much more beautiful. McClure must have nine lives, like a cat, to survive his many trials, and a resilience any spy would envy. But if he doesn't find a way to bounce back after every hitch, he risks a nasty death. And maybe the love of the only woman he cares about. Figuring out who he can trust --- especially Annika --- is his most pressing issue. BELOVED ENEMY is simply unputdownable.

Very poor
By Full Tilt
I have enjoyed this author in the past but Beloved Enemy is not a good read. Too many death-defying escapes, twisted plot lines, breathless, silly sex scenes. This has been one of those books that I keep asking myself why am I reading it until I just decided to quit. I don't care how it ends.

Dreary
By Ken C.
The prequel to Beloved Enemy is Father Night, which ended up with an average rating of 2 1/2 stars. With only 4 reviews as I write this, Beloved Enemy is doing better, but I suggest that you read the five star reviews to see what they have to say about the actual novel. Given how many books I read, it is inevitable that I put many of them down, unfinished. So it's a bit of a tribute to Beloved Enemy that I finished it, but it was really quite a struggle. There are too many characters, some with more than one name, a very convoluted plot, and a lack of something the reader can grab onto and care about. It sure isn't the nominal hero, Jack McClure, who has the charisma of a toilet seat. And speaking of toilets, this novel features what must be the first bathroom sex scene between two women. Not a Hallmark event. All in all, if you skipped Beloved Enemy, you would be doing yourself a favor.
