About the Author
Joy Hakim, a former teacher, editor, and writer won the prestigious James Michener Prize for her series, A History of US, which has sold over 4 million copies nationwide. A graduate of Smith College and Goucher College she spent years teaching students from elementary school up to the college level. She also served as an Associate Editor at Norfolk's Virginian-Pilot, and was an Assistant Editor at McGraw-Hill's World News.

Don't bother with the Kindle edition

Very disappointing, the parts of the book that make it interesting are missing. When they 'reformatted' it, they took out the best part. I am an avid kindle reader - my main source of books, but definitely skip this one and buy a used copy of the paper book. In my opinion this is a ploy by the author and publisher to make you buy both versions of the book. If you have a student using this in school, they may miss important content.

Consummate informational text

Breaking the textbook mold, "A History of US" contains none of the intimidation that comes with behemoth texts. It tells the tale of America in 10 user-friendly, small, illustrated books written in a personal tone, as if the author were a storyteller. (An 11th source book, with original documents, is also available.) "All the People", the last volume in the series, has been brought up to date with coverage of the election of Barack Obama, along with some thoughts on its significance. This book, a new 4th edition, has been completely redesigned with a bold contemporary look. Readers will encounter both famous and little-known Americans (Joe McCarthy, Martin Luther King, Jr., Barack Obama's mother), historical events (the Vietnam War, the first man on the moon, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan), and major cultural movements (Civil Rights, 1960s counterculture, feminism). A chapter on the 21st century financial crisis explains the basics of investment banking. This is a book meant to provoke discussion and thought among readers of all ages.
