Mitchell Snay is Professor of History at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. He is the author of Gospel of Disunion: Religion and Separatism in the Antebellum South and co-editor of Religion and the Antebellum Debate over Slavery.

Specious connections make for worrisome history

Mr. Snay provides a useful description of the Fenians, a group of Irish immigrants seeking to reclaim their homeland from the British via militar means. Many Fenians joined the Union Army during the Civil War with the avowed purpose of learning how to fight the British when the time came. I had read much about the acrimony between the Irish and African Americans before and after the war, and I thought this book would shed some light on the conspiracy between Irish immigrants and Southern whites. This book did not do that, so do not look for it. Mr. Snay sought to develop parallels among three groups: the Fenians, the Union League (a political arm of the Republican Party aimed at increasing black votes in the South after the war), unfortunately, the Ku Klux Klan as a paramilitary arm of Southern whites. I was disappointed that he chose to use the KKK as an arm of southern whites since not all whites were happy with the Klan and did not appreciate their approach. The Union League did engage in parades and ceremonies using swords and guns as icons, but the members of the League rarely engaged in armed conflict with any other group. While the vignettes were interesting, none of them tied the groups through collaboration or conflict with each other. I would read this book with a box rather than a grain of salt as Mr. Snay seems to have worked a little too hard at trying to make connections where they were tenuous at best.
