From the author of Ghosts in the Fog comes a story that will appeal to lovers of history, adventure, and dogs.

BYRD & IGLOO is the first narrative nonfiction book to tell the daring adventures of legendary polar explorer and aviator Richard Byrd and his lovable dog explorer, Igloo. Byrd is known for being the first to fly a plane over the North and South Poles, while Igloo is famous for being the only dog to explore both the North and South Poles. The adventures of Byrd and Igloo opened the door for science and research in the Antarctic. Featuring direct quotes from letters, diaries and interviews, newspaper clippings, expedition records, maps, charts, as well as never-before-seen photos, it will give the complete story of the explorers' journey. Though rooted in history with evidence from many museums and research centers, Byrd & Igloo will be exciting in tone, making it accessible and interesting for young readers.

From School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-Readers learn about Richard E. Byrd's arctic adventures from the point of view of the small dog that accompanied him every step of the way. While some background information is provided about the explorer and aviator's earlier years, Seiple's work primarily focuses on the years between 1926 and 1931 when Byrd's dog, Igloo, was with him and during which time he flew over both the North and South poles. Told in narrative style in brief chapters, their adventures read more like a novel than a history book as a great deal of anthropomorphizing of Igloo's thoughts and feelings are included. However, the use of a dog is an excellent gateway into polar adventure for elementary students and makes it a more compelling read. Much of the book draws from primary sources and includes a number of photographs, adding interest and historical credibility, but it is better suited for general-interest reading than report writing. Overall this is a solid and engaging look at Byrd's explorations that will appeal to children interested in history and adventure.-Elizabeth Nicolai, Anchorage Public Library, AKα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
On a cold, damp morning, as Maris Boggs, the cofounder and director of the Bureau of Commercial Economics, waited for a bus, a stray puppy leaned against her. She couldn’t leave him behind. About to undertake his trip to the Arctic, Richard Byrd didn’t want a dog either, but Maris convinced him to take the terrier. Thus, on April 5, 1926, the dog joined Byrd and his crew as they sailed for Norway, where Byrd would challenge Roald Amundsen to become the first man to fly over the North Pole. The dog, soon named Igloo, became Byrd’s constant companion. In 1928, their second great adventure began: sailing to Antarctica so Byrd could fly over the South Pole. Although from time to time the author tends to ascribe human thoughts and feelings to Igloo, this doesn’t detract from the fast-moving, exciting account of his adventures. With plenty of archival black-and-white photos and five pages of source notes, this is a well-researched and welcome piece of narrative nonfiction. Grades 4-7. --J. B. Petty

GREAT true story about an amazing man and his amazing dog!
By Nick Graham
If you want a fascinating, true story about a companion animal who was a part of history, then this is the book for you. I love the bond between this unlikely duo, and I have read many (most) books in this genre. I have recommended it to the "I Love Smooth Hair Fox Terrier" Facebook group and I recommend it here. You'll be happy to read and to share this book with others.

My 10 year old can not put this book down. He is usually not much of a reader so it must be good! He was reading on the school bus ride home, before bed and again while eating his breakfast! I couldn't believe it.

By Seth G.
I really liked this book because Byrd wanted to fly across the North pole and South pole but it took him and his crew a lot of work to survive and fly across the North pole and south pole. They crashed a few times on there journey and on one of the crashes one of Byrds crew members died he was also his friend his name was Bennet. One of the times the plane was to heavy and they had to drop bags of food. But whenever Byrd got back from the plane Igloo Byrds Dog and Best friend was always there to greet him. At the end of the book Byrd finally accomplished flying over the North pole and the South pole. But later Igloo died from a illness.
