The diary entries are still laugh-out-loud funny -- but this is a whole new beginning. Everything is another year dumber!
As Jamie grapples with school, grades, and middle school's Big Questions, don't miss even more of her words of wisdom like, "If someone is really, really intelligent, it would be polite if they would ugly it up a bit before they left the house."
(Jamie STILL has no idea that anybody is reading her diary. So please, please, please don't tell her.)

Dear Whoever Is Reading My Dumb Diary,
Stop it.
I know you're hoping to read my diary and find out what it is about me that makes me so awesome.
And you probably want to steal my beauty secrets, like how not trying to be beautiful all the time makes me beautifuller. Or maybe you're hoping to get a glimpse of my supersecret art secrets, like how I make glitter stick to things. (Okay, maybe that one is not that secret, but I do have other things about me that are way greater than they need to be.)
"Way Greater Than She Needs To Be." I'm getting older now, and I need to think about the future. So I officially authorize that saying to be engraved on the first twenty large statues people create of me. After that, they can choose other super-complimentary things.
Frequent use of the word "cute" is also authorized, although I really prefer "kewt." (It's kewter.)
Also, parents, if you're reading this, stop reading my diary now. I know I'm not supposed to point out other people's flaws, but I didn't actually point them out, I only wrote them out. And if you punish me for it, I'll know that you read my diary. Not only am I not giving you permission to do that, it will just prove how much less awesome you are than me.
Signed,
Jamie Kelly

Snarky Middle Grade Fun
By M. Kelly
Jamie Kelly might be my middle school alter ego, and not just because of our last names. She hates math, believes more food should be served in stacks, has a snarky sense of humor, and would die if anyone read her diary. Let's face it, she could be my alter ego today. After twelve books, each following a month in her life, Jim Benton's hilarious middle schooler is back and fired up.
Jamie can't believe she has to go back to school and deal with things like vocabulary bees, perfect girls who somehow make glasses look adorable, and the possibility of summer school. She handles all of her life's crises with humor that had me giggling. Benton has a gift for writing Jamie's voice exactly like the girl you'd want sitting next to you in class, whispering terrible comments. Some gems include, "Teachers have the very difficult job of teaching dumb things to even dumber people" and telling her mom, "I love it when you use my middle name...let's use it all the time."
The Dear Dumb Diary books are extremely popular, so most readers won't be starting the series with this volume. If they did, they would not miss out on any of the jokes and would probably be motivated to catch up with the previous 12 books. This book is perfect for your humor-loving middle grade student.

Amazing collection
By AFM
Am I the first to review this book ? What an honor !
I bought this book to my daughter (13 years old), because she is a big fan of this series (she has all books). But the most important for me it is her pleasure reading these books, laughing loud about all these funny situations . This is what I am waiting for new Jim's book - no less than this .
There authors that you can trust because they are good on it - and Jim is one of these guys !

Kristi's Book Nook
By Kristi Bernard
Reading someone's diary is an invasion of privacy. You must avoid the temptation at all costs. You wouldn't like it if someone read your private words and thoughts. Jamie Kelly let's readers know right away that she will know if they've flipped through the pages of her diary. She considers herself to be a smart girl, even a genius. Jamie likes to share thoughts on how she hates math. She doesn't like how math always seems to have issues to be solved and it causes her to make hideous math faces. Jamie's parents are aware that she is having trouble with math. Jamie's friend Isabella is good at math. Isabella will help Jamie with her math, and in exchange Jamie will help Isabella with language arts. Which by the way, is Jamie's favorite subject. Jamie has the same issues as any other middle grade student you would know. She has funny things to say about her teachers and her diary shows readers in drawings and quirky notes and scribbles. And just like any other middle grader Jamie has problems with the schools beauty queen. Her name is Angeline and she even makes dorky look adorable. The thing that really irritates Jamie is that according to Isabella, Angeline is really smart with or without the glasses. Jamie has lots of worries and issues, but her real dilemma begins when Isabella and Angeline talk about spending the summer in the soon to be built pool that will be ready for the summer at Isabella's. Jamie could be in summer school if she doesn't find a way to conquer her math issues. Middle grade readers will love the quirky antics and rants by Jamie as she muttles through and tries to find her way day by day. Hilarious illustrations show readers exactly what she is thinking and feeling. Benton does an excellent job of placing readers into the life and mind of a middle grade girl. Benton's tales from Mackerel Middle School will have readers anxiously following Jamie as she makes her way through her vicarious life. The back of the book has a quiz asking readers if they are vocabulicious. This series is great for getting kids engaged in reading.
