Jeffery L. Buller is dean of the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College at Florida Atlantic University. Evoke great performances

Positive academic leadership is not about focusing on problems, putting out fires, finding people to blame, manipulation, spending too much time on troublemakers, and acting like the heroic leader. It is about nurturing the best in your team to generate the best performance. It is about supporting and rewarding team members, maintaining and improving workplace morale, job satisfaction, and personal and professional growth. It seeks consensus through the exchange of ideas, and works on creating a positive environment: "Your job is to work in the messy, complex, and interesting environment of a college or university shaped by human flaw and error, using your judgment and leadership to make that environment as conducive to success as possible" (p.70).
An academic leader himself, Jeffrey Buller recognizes that a hierarchical, command-and-control style is inimical to the academic environment and those who work in it. His leader spends time and effort celebrating others' successes and supporting them in their failures, and building a community that is resilient in the face of challenges and threats. This leader brings joy to work, acts as servant, and puts others and the program first. The leader respects the judgments of faculty and is interested not simply in outcomes, but in a positive process to reach outcomes.
The positive academic leader uses constructive language that articulates solutions, praises and encourages, and expresses care for faculty, staff, and students; language that focuses on what we want to achieve rather than what we want to avoid. Keeping in mind that the ultimate goal is to help others make their dreams come true, positive academic leaders maintain a positive perspective. They identify their core values, develop their own philosophy of leadership, and align it with their institution's goals.
It all sounds wonderful, and actually, it is. Buller's writing is not only inspiring, but also offers many pieces of practical advice and reminders, such as "end weeks, semesters, and academic years by summarizing the good things that happened during that time" (p.234) and "evaluate the members of the faculty and staff both as individuals and as members of a team that contributes to the mission of the program" (p.235). His metaphor of the leader as conductor inspiring others to give their best performance is helpful, and he exploits it fully: "at a college or university, harmony is diminished by administrators who insist on being soloists when what they really should be doing is evoking great performances from others" (p. 178).
If there is a downside to all this, it is that the leader Buller describes may not be perceived as a leader at all, a challenge Buller acknowledges: "The default understanding others bring to a new environment is usually that the administrator is the boss and that the boss makes all the decisions and instructs everyone else in what to do. Since positive academic leadership is more about building environments than about ruling from a position of power, those who aren't familiar with this approach sometimes interpret it as anarchy or weakness" (p.174). Correct, and this perception could come from below or above. Buller offers advice on how to explain the leadership style to those who may not appreciate it for what it is.
It is refreshing to read a book on leadership that thoroughly understands the higher education environment and its challenges. I found myself nodding in agreement and silently, enthusiastically agreeing with Buller's explanations and advice. This was a very worthwhile read, one that confirmed and extended my understanding of successful leadership in an academic environment. I doubt it will turn me into a successful leader overnight, but it is pointing me in a very good direction.

Positive book for academic leaders

I have found this book very good for administrators who want to streamline their work processes. It is also good at helping you recognize red tape and nay-sayers and giving good tips on how to deal with them. And if you work in academics, you know they are the 80%!
