Must read for any nurse who thinks of themselves as a leader, intrapreneur, or entrepreneur
By LeaRae Keyes
"Economics and Financial Management for Nurses and Nurse Leaders" second edition by Susan J. Penner, Springer Publishing Company, 2013

The stated purpose of this book is as follows: to meet the learning needs of a broad range of nurses, from staff to nurse managers, from entry-level undergraduate students to master's level clinical practitioners. These nurses will learn the fundamentals of economics, financing, and budgeting that affect their work settings and their delivery of health care. These nurses also will develop practical, hands-on skills in budgeting, financial analysis, and making a business case for improving patient care as they apply concepts from this textbook."

Ms. Penner does an excellent job of presenting the information and using case examples to increases the readers understand of the various concepts. While I expected this book to be informative I was surprised by how interesting it is.
I would highly recommend this book to any nurse entrepreneur. It is critical for nurse entrepreneurs to understand the financial impact of service changes. If a nurse wants to propose new services to an institution the nurse needs to be able to speak in financial terms to the primary decision makers.

An important comment made by Ms. Penner is as follows: "It is important for all nurses to understand their impact on health care costs. Learning about budgeting, and budget planning is a first step toward increasing the nurse's accountability for the budget." I agree that it is valuable for all nurses to understand the economics of health care so as to have an effective impact on finances and care. A recent graduate may not be interested in the financial aspects of health care while still finding their way within the system. However, any nurse that has more than a few years of experience would benefit from reading this book.

Throughout the book, Ms. Penner references websites where the reader can go for additional information. She also provides a conclusion section and a discussion and exercises section at the end of each chapter. I found this to be helpful in solidify the learning from the various chapters.

There are also bit of humor sprinkled throughout the book such as with the quote: "a hospital bed is a parked taxi with the meter running" - Groucho Marx.

If a nurse wants to advance their career they would be wise to heed Ms. Pener's advice: "Nurses demonstrate leadership when they apply their knowledge to improve care and to point out potential short-term and long-term savings from improving care." In another chapter, Ms. Penner notes: "Nurses will have increased opportunities to contribute to innovations in health care reform."

Chapter 7: Special Purpose, Capital , and Other Budgets would be an excellent chapter for any nurse wanting to start a business or wanting to be an intrapreneur to read. Entrepreneur and intrapreneurs could benefit greatly by applying the information in Chapter 10: Writing a Business Plan. To make it even easier Ms. Penner has included a number of sample business plans that any nurse in business could use as a format and as a direction for developing a business plan specific to their business idea.

This book is a must read for any nurse who thinks of themselves as a leader, intrapreneur, or entrepreneur. One final quote seems to sum it all up. "It should be clear that nurses of today and on into the future will benefit from expanding their understanding of the economics and financing of health care. Nurses are needed not only as caregivers and clinicians. Nurses must also serve as leaders in developing and managing high-quality and cost-effective programs and service for inpatient and community-based care." As nurses this is how we will show our worth in the health care arena. To do this we must understand the economics of health care and demonstrate how nurses can and do impact the bottom line.

Content is excellent, but the formatting and highlighting of key concepts ...
By Robert S.
MEH. Content is excellent, but the formatting and highlighting of key concepts and terminology is poor. Next edition should correct this problem and also change the spacing and fonts so that the text is easier on the eyes and leaves the intended impression. Lazy editing. Seems to be a case of just wanting to get this textbook published without properly editing it.

By Lauryn Wagner
Well, written, easy to follow text for nurses who wish to improve their managerial skills in regards to financial management. The book goes into detail on insurance, health billing, types of budgets, and writing business plans and grant proposals. The examples given in the book are helpful. I would recommend this book to others.
