Just right.

This book has become a cherished addition to my Mindfulness and Insight collection, the closest I've come to having a flesh and blood teacher in my meditation practice.
Kamalashila's writing is clear, simple, and ultimately inspiring as he walks the reader through each step and stage of Buddhist Meditation. What I like most here is that the book makes concepts accessible to newcomers and those with more experience. Start with simplicity, sit, breathe, notice, read, and refine.
For example, after meditating on a beautiful October night last year, I found myself free of all thought, suspended in a state of lucid awareness. That was a first. This lasted for some time, I'm not sure how long, and only ended because I found myself suddenly submerged in white light. The light startled me and I shot out of my meditative state, back to the candlelit room. I was unable to explain what had happened until reading this book. I was in the second dhyana. Now, it is helpful to have a guide like this on the road so one can measure his progress, make necessary adjustments, and have some idea of what to expect with continued practice. More, it is necessary so one knows if he's getting sidetracked with phenomena, which are bound to arise.
I'll be reading this one many times.

On Point and of Benefit to All Beings

This book does a great job of succinctly yet comprehensively showcasing the vast knowledge base of meditative practices of Early Buddhism. It modernizes the instructions, benefits, and practices in a form that anyone from a beginner to seasoned meditator can learn from. I, even, bought a copy for a friend, and he too has benefited from undergoing the progressive meditations that build upon each other. As a therapist, I have used it to teach my clients mindfulness and meditative techniques.
